ICONIC QUEEN – (1.45 Pontefract, 2pts win 15/2)
ICONIC QUEEN was too green to do herself justice on her debut at Kempton in July, racing keenly in midfield after taking a bump at the start and keeping on into third place in a race run to suit prominent types (the winner made all). She was beaten by a head into second place when 11-1 for a fillies’ maiden at Glorious Goodwood on her next start and it was a case of third time lucky at Chester in August where she scored comfortably on good to soft ground as the evens favourite. However, her most eyecatching effort came on her latest start when fifth of 16 to Mystery Angle in a hot Newmarket nursery. There was a huge track bias that day, with high-drawn prominent racers enjoying a big edge. The first three home came from stalls 16, 13 and 15, with Iconic Queen and Meu Amor – her shorter-priced stablemate – fighting it out on the slower ground down the middle of the track. Her prominent style will be an asset today and stall 5 of 7 could prove handy as the runners will come stands’ side in the straight. Trainer Ralph Beckett has a fantastic record with his juveniles at this track and she looks over-priced at around 7-1.
EPIC ENDEAVOUR did well to win at Newbury last time as he had a tricky draw in stall 10 of 17 and he was taken on for the lead, The other placed horses were drawn in stalls 4, 6 and 2 and were described as ‘towards rear’, ‘held up behind leaders’ and ‘midfield’. Sir Titan, who took him on for the lead, dropped away to finish 12th. The step up to 1m could suit.
George Baker is 2-2 with his first-time visored runners this year, with the wins at 14-1 and 10-1. GEORGE OF HEARTS hasn’t shown a huge amount in three runs this season but it was a similar story last year, with him winning fourth-time out on heavy ground in a 16-runner Newmarket handicap. He’s only 2lb higher today and looks over-priced at around the 14-1 mark.
COPPER COIN – (3.40 Plumpton, 1pt win 8/1)
Michael Scudamore does well with horses having their first start in a handicap chase, scoring with 11 of the 55 qualifiers since 2008 (20.0% strike-rate) for a profit of £32.75 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those who raced over hurdles last time, as opposed to a novice/beginners’ chase, won ten of their 40 starts in the same period and returned a profit of £41.75. COPPER COIN, third in a maiden hurdle at Uttoxeter last month on his first outing since last November, looks worth chancing to get off the mark.
