Top tipster Andrew Mount kicks off the new week with four selections at Bath, Thirsk and Wolverhampton
DAN DE LIGHT – 2.40 Thirsk
DAN DE LIGHT very much caught the eye when fifth in a good-ground 5f Beverley maiden on his third outing, keeping on well under tender handling and doing best of those to come from off the pace. I took a chance and backed him ay Hamilton on his nursery debut last time but he seemed unsuited by the very soft going, struggling home in sixth place. Today’s quicker surface will suit and the headgear could bring about improvement. He’s drawn high (stall 18 of 20) but the stands’ side rail has been largely unexplored at Thirsk this season and the ground won’t be as poached as that down the middle. There were certainly signs at the last meeting that the nearside could be no worse than the middle, with 20-1 shot Conga finishing second from stall 16 after racing alone on the rail.
MOTAGALLY – 4.05 Bath
MOTAGALLY needs to race around a left-handed bend and can be forgiven his Great St Wilfrid defeat at Ripon last time over a straight 6f. He won over today’s course and distance the time before, a run that took his record left-handed to 13111 (4-5), with the sole defeat when failing to settle at Lingfield on last season’s reappearance.
THE MOUSEN CHAMP – 4.40 Wolverhampton
Time Frame is priced at just 5-2 for this 6f maiden auction but James Tate’s newcomers usually need the outing and his sire, Fountain Of Youth, is just 2-95 with his all-weather runners, including 0-43 with his progeny on Tapeta. THE MOUSEN CHAMP looks the most interesting alternative. He was only just behind subsequent triple winner Acklam Express when a 50-1 fourth on good ground at Beverley in June and has since twice run with credit on soft going despite not being ideally suited to such conditions. Scratched when drawn wide here the other day, stall 6 looks ideal.
BELL HEATHER – 5.50 Wolverhampton
BELL HEATHER is just one from 29 on turf and will be much happier back at Wolverhampton her Chester tenth from a tricky draw. That Chester race has already thrown up winners and her five all-weather wins have all come at today’s venue. The last time she ran here she fared best of the prominent racers in an 11-1 third over 7f, a trip that’s very much on the sharp side. Ray Dowson takes off a valuable 5lb.
