DONTASKMEAGAIN (2.15 Brighton)

In speed ratings terms those who’ve had a previous run in the 7f EBF Novice Stakes have barely registered a pulse, let alone a figure suggesting they are likely future winners. This makes the two newcomers of obvious interest and the one I like is Mark Johnston’s DONTASKMEGAIN. The yard has run 15 two-year-old colts here on their debuts, with four winning (profit of £6.73) and another six running second or third.

Tony Carrol has a fantastic record at Brighton, especially in late summer, and backing his runners blind here during August and September since 2012 would have found 32 winners from 157 bets (20.4% strike-rate) for a profit of £32.98 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those ridden by Tom Marquand won five of their 13 starts (38.5%) for a profit of £18.88, with six of the eight beaten horses making the frame. The in-form handler runs two in the 7f Brighton Palace Pier Gallopers Handicap (2.45) and the obvious one is SILVERTURNSTOGOLD, short-headed over a mile in an apprentice handicap here last time.

FRECKLES (3.50 Brighton)

Marcus Tregoning has a fine record with last-time out winners, especially those returned to the track relatively quickly. This century, thosecoming back within four weeks won 90 of their 325 starts (27.7% strike-rate) for a profit of £96.20 to a £1 level stake at SP. Since 2017, his strike-rate is 40% (12 from 30) for a profit of £42.92. Last week’s Chepstow scorer FRECKLES fits the bill in the 1m2f Antiques Vintage & Collectables Fair 20 October Handicap (3.50).
