Top tipster Andrew Mount was among the winner again on Friday with Claud and Goldie (11-2 from 12-1) and has four bets on Saturday
GALAHAD QUEST - (1.30 Haydock, 1pt win - 12/1)
The Nick Williams-trained GALAHAD QUEST, a winner over hurdles on Trials Day last term, is gradually getting the hang of things over fences and took another step forward when third in a Grade 2 course and distance novice’ chase last time. Starting as the 25-1 'rag' in the four-runner line-up, he was given a patient ride on a day such tactics were far from ideal. He briefly looked as though he might play a hand in the finish but mistakes at the third last and penultimate fence put paid to his chances and he came home just over 12 lengths behind all-the-way winner Silver Hallmark in third place. That was only his second run over fences and, with his hurdle win coming on his third start over the smaller obstacles, it could pay to side with him now that he makes his handicap chase debut off a very exploitable mark of 129.
DEMACHINE – (1.50 Ascot, 2pts win - 4/1)
DEMACHINE was only third when favourite for a novice handicap chase at Newbury last time but has undergone wind surgery since and that would explain why he underperformed. Kerry Lee does well with her chasers on their first start back after a wind operation, scoring with four of the 12 qualifiers since the procedure had to be declared in January 2018 for a profit of £37.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. Two of the beaten horses ran second (20-1 and 11-1) and a return to his earlier chase form when winning at Uttoxeter and in a fast time over course and distance would give him every chance in this Grade 2 contest.
STAKE ACCLAIM – (3.46 Lingfield, 1pt each-way - 20/1)
Dean Ivory’s stable is showing positive signs after a quiet spell and STAKE ACCLAIM could be worth chancing in first-time blinkers in this 5f handicap. He’s five from 19 with this headgear in all-weather handicaps in the past ten years for a profit of £42.63 to a £1 level stale at SP. Five of the beaten horses placed including at 66-1. Stake Acclaims has only worn first-time headgear once before – winning in cheekpieces at 12-1. The veteran hasn’t won for almost two years but he’s dropped to a career-low mark as a result and ran respectably when a 66-1 sixth at Southwell last time.
A TOUCH OF LUCK – 4.20 Newcastle, 1pt each-way - 20/1)
A TOUCH OF LUCK is a seven-race maiden but finished a respectable sixth back from a short break at Lingfield last time, again looking as though the sharp track was no help. The return to this venue could help and it’s interesting to see the hood go on for the first time – since 2012 Richard Fahey has a seven from 31 record with fillies in this headgear (22.6% strike-rate) for a profit of £43.88 to a £1 level stake at SP.
