With Newcastle and Chepstow abandoned, top tipster Andrew Mount heads to Kempton and Lingfield for Saturday's three selections
It’s odd to see Master Tommytucker heading the betting for the Grade 2 Pendil Novices’ Chase at Kempton on Saturday (1.15) as he jumped out to his left and fell at this venue on his latest outing. That was the second time he’s fallen in his last three starts and I’d much rather side with COMMANCHE RED, who was a winner for this column in a course and distance novices’ handicap chase on Boxing Day. That was very impressive as he came from midfield – not easy to do here – and the race has worked out very well, with nine-length runner-up Simply The Betts scoring at Cheltenham on Trials Day and the third, stablemate On The Slopes, placing behind Simply The Betts before scoring on his return to Kempton. Commanche Red runs well when fresh, recording form figures of 31615131 (4-8) when rested for at least six weeks, improving to 1511 (3-4) on right-handed tracks. He clocked a very fast time for that latest win and is unbeaten in two course outings.
Course form often comes to the fore in the Betway Handicap Chase (3.35) and it usually pays to race handily on the chase course at Kempton. Ben Pauling is certainly aware of the tactics required to win here and while we’d have made a profit backing his chasers blind at Kempton (four winners from 12 runners, +£17.75) it’s interesting to note that he’s three from five with front runners (+£11.75) and one from four with prominent racers (+£9.00). KILDISTART latest win came when ridden patiently at Aintree last spring but he has won from the front before and his two course outings – both over hurdles – produced a 5-1 win and a runner-up effort in a big field. He looks set to improve for the quicker going after struggling in heavy conditions at Ascot the last twice.
CITY TOUR has done well since switchd to Polytrack, recording form figures of 227211 (2-6), improving to 11 (2-2) in blinkers. He won eased down by four lengths at Kempton last time, clocking an excellent speed figure in the process. He’s gone up 9lb for that effort but there could be more to come and he can complete his hat-trick in the 1m4f Betway handicap at Lingfield (4.25).
