Bunbury Cup 2019Andrew Mount has four selections At Ascot, Leopardstown and Newmarket on Saturday, including a 28-1 shot in the Bunbury Cup

BE EASY – 1.00 Ascot

BE EASY ran a lovely race on her debut at Haydock last month, keeping on well into fourth place at 10-1, just over three lengths behind the all-the-way winner Choral Work. The runner-up and third were both always prominent and Ed Walker has a fantastic record with second-time out 3yos that run well on their debuts. Had we bet all those who won or got within five lengths of the winner we would have won 12 of our 29 bets (41.4% strike-rate) and made a profit of £15.06 to a £1 level stake at SP.

LANDUE – 1.30 Ascot

They crawled in the 1m4f Kempton handicap won by Palavecino on June 21st, with the first three home described as ‘made all’, ‘close up’ and ‘chased leader’. The only one to make significant ground from off the pace was the fourth home, LANDUE. Marcus Tregoning’s 5yo was beaten by almost six lengths but he put plenty of distance between himself and the fifth-placed horse. He should encounter a stronger pace in the Betfred ‘Thanks To The NHS’ Handicap today and the first-time cheekpieces could bring about some improvement. His trainer has a seven from 39 record with this headgear on turf, for a profit of £24.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. Landue had also fared best of the hold-up horses when third at Lingfield on his return – his first start since gelded.

VAFORTINO – 2.00 Leopardstown

VAFORTINO ran a promising race on his debut at Navan last month, finishing a one-length fourth at 11-1 when meeting with slight interference. His sire New Bay has a three from four record with second-time out juveniles (10-1, 11-8 and 5-4), with the only loser being 7-2 shot First Prophet who reportedly ran flat in the Chesham Stakes just six days after his Newbury debut win.

CARDSHARP – 4.10 Newmarket

Mark Johnston further boosted his fine summer record in Newmarket handicaps with a double yesterday and it could be worth chancing CARDSHARP in the 7f bet365 Bunbury Cup Handicap. Since 2012, backing Johnston’s Newmarket runners (July Course or Rowley Mile) in June, July and August would have found 63 winners from 294 runners (21.4% strike-rate) for a profit of £95.64 to a £1 level stake at SP. Cardsharp has finished well beaten over a mile in both runs this term but the return to 7f could be the key The last time he ran over this trip in handicap company he stayed on strongly to score by just over two lengths off a mark of 107 at York as is 4lb lower here. He likes this track – he won the Group 2 July Stakes over 6f at this meeting in 2017 and was fourth of 18 in this race 12 months later, when effectively rated 111 under a penalty.
