It's Derby day and top tipster Andrew Mount has four selections at Epsom, Haydock and Yarmouth
SAFE VOYAGE – 2.25 Epsom
SAFE VOYAGE has fine record over this specialist 7f trip when racing on a left-handed track, recording form figures of U11112 (5-7), with the latest defeat by Space Blues at Haydock when beaten by a neck. That form was franked by the winner who went on to score in Group 3 company at Longchamp. Safe Voyage should get a good tow into this race from Vale Of Kent and Jack’s Point and can pick up the pieces late. The price is nothing special but I also want to play him in a CSF (computer straight forecast) with OH THIS IS US, another who should be finishing to good effect. His two runs here have produced placed efforts in the Group 3 company over the extended mile.
SHELIR – 2.40 Haydock
SHELIR ran a fine race in the 7f Buckingham Palace Handicap at Royal Ascot, finishing fifth overall and doing best of those drawn in single figures and second best of those to race down the middle of the track (first five drawn 26, 22, 16, 27 and 6). The return to 1m won’t hurt (he won over this trip in Ireland) and he remains open to improvement on only his third start for in-form David O’Meara.
LOUGANINI – 4.25 Haydock
Those of you who listen to William Hill radio may have heard me talk about LOUGANINI last night after the form of his comeback fourth at Newbury was further boosted by Galata Bridge, the winner of Wolverhampton’s 8.30. LOUGANINI had gone into the tracker after his debut win at Newmarket last November where the 10-1 shot came late on a track that favoured prominent racers. He finished just ahead of Celestran, another who was ridden patiently, and he went on to win his next two before placing in Listed company. Sent off as the 5-2 second favourite for his reappearance in a 1m2f Newbury novice, Roger Charlton’s 3yo was conceding weight to all bar one of his rivals and was not helped by racing down the centre of the track in the straight where the ground was slowest. They effectively split into two groups that day, with the four who raced far side finishing first, second, third and eighth. Fifth home Cozone, second best of the centre group, was a narrow 22-1 second at Kempton next time, and seventh-placed Arabian Warrior was second (promoted to first) at Wolverhampton on Thursday. Louganini also failed to settle in the early stages and can make a winning handicap debut today.
ROVANIEMI – 7.25 Yarmouth
The strong wind made life tough for front-runners at Yarmouth on Monday and those ridden patiently from low draws on the straight track were favoured. The wind strength and direction is forecast to be virtually identical today and that will help David Simcock’s ROVANIEMI, who fared best of the closers when third at Kempton on his reappearance.
