Top tipster Andrew Mount has been in fine form this week and has four selections on Saturday.
MIRACLE EAGLE – 12.15 Newcastle
MIRACLE EAGLE (stall 10 of 14) ran a pleasing 80-1 fifth at Thirsk on her debut 11 days ago, where she was not helped by sticking close to the inside rail from her tricky stall 2 of 11 draw. The switch to Tapeta could suit and trainer Jedd O’Keeffe remains in good form, with four winners (40-1, 16-1, 17-2 and 4-1) in the past fortnight. She earned a respectable speed figure of 94 from Raceform for that effort, second best in the race after the 1-3 favourite Tilsit (98). The market leader was narrowly beaten over trip and track last time but stall 2 isn’t ideal.
GLENTIES – 3.50 Newmarket
GELNTIES was a big eyecatcher when third at Haydock on his handicap debut, chasing the strong early pace close to the inside rail in a race set up for the finishers down the middle of the track. He managed to find trouble in a three-runner contest when second at Goodwood next time (though in fairness looked beaten at the time) and is worth another chance to confirm that Haydock promise. Mark Johnston has a fine record in Newmarket handicaps in the summer months, scoring with 59 of his 280 runners since 2012 (21.1% strike-rate) for a profit of £73.39 to a £1 level stake at SP. Prior to this year, those runners were all on the July Course but the pattern has continued on the Rowley Mile this month, with six winners from 15 runners prior to Friday’s racing, for a profit of £23.57. STOP PRESS – Johnston’s two qualifiers on Friday both won, at 12-1 and 100-30
LONGROOM & HENLEY– 4.35 Redcar
LONGROOM was a shade disappointing when I recommending him at Newcastle last time, finishing a one-length fourth. With hindsight, that run might have been needed after a three-month break and he can bounce back in the 5f Teesville Handicap at Redcar (4.35). He’s only had two runs since joining in-form Paul Midgley, winning the other one (also at Newcastle). Six of his seven wins have come on fast turf, the latest off a mark of 81 at Ayr in August 2018. He’s a massive 18lb lower here and looks good value at around the 11-2 mark.
I’, also backing HENLEY, who caught the when racing alone towards the stands’ side rail from his poor high draw at Thirsk last time, finishing fifth at 16-1 (first five drawn 3, 4, 9, 7 and 11). The poorly-drawn third, Mr Wagyu, has already come out and won and his middle draw and prominent style are often an asset here.
