Andrew Mount has fired in winners at 16-1 (SP 10-1) and 11-4 (SP 7-2) in the last two days and has three more bets at Newmarket and Newcastle on Saturday
Since finishing second at 10-1 on his racecourse debut, LEODIS DREAM has won four of his six turf starts with excuses for the two defeats. He raced hard up against the ‘dead’ rail when disappointing at Sandown and anticipated the start, hitting his head on the stalls when trailing home last of 19 at York the time before. He beat only one home in a Class 2 handicap at Wolverhampton when last seen but again made the running on the ‘dead’ rail, going off too hard in a race run to suit the closers. He looks the likely pace angle, won first-time out last season and the David O’Meara yard has two seconds in the sprint handicaps here yesterday. The stalls are against the stands’ side rail and with the strong wind likely to be half or fully behind them he could be hard to catch.
If a high draw proves advantageous at Newmarket, as I suspect it will, then THE CRUISING LORD is no 66-1 shot to win the Group 3 Betfair Supports Racing Welfare Palace House Stakes. Trainer Michael Attwater had a couple of close seconds at 14-1 and 11-1 yesterday and the four-year-old looks well berthed in stall 12 of 13. He doesn’t like Ascot, but his record elsewhere, over trips shy of 6f, stands at 24125 (1-5), including a 100-1 fourth of 14 in the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes over trip and track.
LONGROOM was always likely to improve for the switch from Noel Wilson to Paul Midgley and the eight-year-old scored more comfortably then the three-quarters of a length winning margin suggested over 6f at Newcastle on his stable debut in March. He’s only gone up 4lb to a mark of 63 and was rated 86 at his peak of Wilson. He’s arguably best in small fields but that last-time out victory came in a field of 11 runners and he can follow up when dropped back to 5f for the #betyourway At Betway Handicap (5.05).
