CALVA D’AUGE – (1.50 Newbury, 2pts win - 7/1)
CALVA D’AUGE reportedly didn’t enjoy travelling overnight when disappointing at Ayr and Kelso last year but his other hurdles runs for Paul Nicholls, below Class 1 level, have seen him record form figures of 1111111 (7-7). He looks over-priced in this Class 2 handicap.
BROOMFIELDS JEREMY – 2.11 Fairyhouse, 1pt each-way - 11/1)
The pace held up in the 2m4f handicap hurdle won by Pour Pavore at Clonmel on November 11, with the winner and runner-up clear from a long way out. BROOMFIELDS JEREMY was given a very patient ride and the 5-2 favourite could never get into contention, staying on into a 21-length third.
This run looks bad on paper but is easily excused and there should be a stronger gallop on here.
FULL BACK – 3.00 Newbury, 1pt each-way 33/1)
It’s not easy to come from off the pace in chase company at Chepstow and four of the first five home in last month’s Native River Handicap Chase were on the front end throughout, with 16-1 winner Chrico Vallis making all.
The patiently-ridden sixth and ninth improved their RPRs (Racing Post Ratings) by 10lb and 45lb respectively when placed on their next starts and that race could be the key to the Ladbrokes Trophy Chase. Kitty’s Light only went down by a head under hold-up tactics, pulling almost ten lengths clear of the third and has since run second to Fusil Raffles in the Charlie Hall Chase and should go well, though I prefer Gary Moore’s FULL BACK.
He finished over 20 lengths behind the winner in seventh but raced keenly in midfield on his seasonal debut and has won at the second time of asking in each of the last two seasons. Nine of the last ten winners of this race were having their second run of the season and the forecast rain will help.
