Top tipster Andrew Mount, in good form this week, has come up with nine selections across seven races on Saturday
TENBURY WELLS – 2.15 Newbury
Stall 1 is eight from 17 over the 1m2f trip at Newbury this year and TENBURY WELLS has the plum draw in this Class 2 handicap. He was way too green to do himself justice on his sole juvenile outing and also ran as though the race were needed when fourth at Newmarket on his reappearance in June. Outside those two seasonal debut efforts, his record reads 112 (2-3), with the defeat by a short head at Sandown when drawn wide.
GOLDEN APOLLO & I AM A DREAMER – 2.30 Ayr
GOLDEN APOLLO, my antepost fancy for the Ayr Gold Cup, just missed the cut and I’m happy to back him in the Silver version, a race he won last year. He also ran well at this meeting in 2018, doing third best of those to race on the unfavoured far side when tenth of 25 in the Gold Cup. The officially heavy going was much slower than preferred that day and he’s 7lb lower now.
I AM A DREAMER, sixth at 33-1 in the Great St Wilfrid, blew the start when only eighth of 15 back at Ripon next time and has been generously dropped 1lb to a mark of 84. He’s 4lb lower than when doing well (seventh of 17) in the centre group over an inadequate 5f at Ascot in July and only 2lb higher than when scoring comfortably at Ripon in June. He looks over-priced at around the 33-1 mark.
FIRST EDITION & FIVETHOUSANDTOONE– 3.25 Newbury
FIRST EDITION did us a favour when scoring by six lengths at Sandown last week but there’s no sentiment involved in recommending him again today. There was a brisk tailwind at Newbury yesterday, favouring early pace, and it’s forecast to be the same again today. Those who raced far side of centre from low draws looked to be racing on the quickest ground and First Edition, drawn in stall 2 of 8 and one of the likeliest front-runners, could enjoy an advantage.
I’ve saved on FIVETHOUSANDTOONE, who made all at Newcastle last time. He was the 1-2 favourite that day but it was still an impressive performance as the track was eating front-runners alive.
STAXTON – 3.40 Ayr
STAXTON won the Great St Wilfrid handicap at Ripon last time despite racing down the stands’ side from a high daw, not necessarily an advantage as most pundits thought. Seven of the first ten finishers raced on the far side that day and the other two stands’ side runners – third home Mr Lupton and seventh-placed Dakota Gold – both won next time. STAXTON has gone up 4lb for that run but is still 11lb lower than his highest previous mark and is 6lb lower than when beaten three lengths in this race 12 last season.
ANOTHER TOUCH – 4.15 Ayr
ANOTHER TOUCH needs a small field and has recorded form figures of 712121113351114 (8-15) when racing in single-figure line-ups for a profit of £35.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. In fields of ten or more runners he’s lost all 23 starts. He won three on the bounce on the all-weather over the winter and is now 1lb lower than for his last handicap success after failing to cope with big field on his last few starts. He won a nursery at this meeting in 2015 and ran well over 1m2f behind Certain Lad last year, a trip he struggled to stay.
MULTELLIE – 4.50 Ayr
MULTELLIE tends to come good in the second half of the season and he also prefers small fields. He returned to winning ways against five rivals at Haydock nine days ago, scoring comfortably despite starting at 9-1. HIs record in turf handicaps from August to October stands at six wins from 24 runs for a profit of £22.10 to a £1 level stake at SP, with five of the wins coming in single-figure line-ups.
LUCKY LODGE – 5.15 Wolverhampton
LUCKY LODGE had a tough draw in stall 12 of 12 when a respectable fourth in a 7f Class 4 Wolverhampton handicap on Monday and looks very interesting now dropping in trip and class at the same venue. Trainer Antony Brittan does well with his all-weather runners returning from a recent outing (within ten days), scoring with 33 of the 172 qualifiers since 2014 (19.2% strike-rate) for a profit of £50.17 to a £1 level. Best late off a strong pace, there’s a few pace angles among his opponents and he looks well drawn in stall 4.
