MORNEY WING (3.30 Sandown)

Repeat winner Loose Chips landed last year’s Casino At Virgin Bet Veterans’ Handicap Chase as a 12-year-old but the other previous winners were all aged ten and it should again pay to side with the ‘younger’ veterans in today’s renewal. Only three of the eight runners qualify on the age angle – Brother Tedd, Dark Flame and MORNEY WING, with the last-named getting the vote.

Philip Hobbs is three from 13 (+£17.50 to a £1 level stake) with his ten-year-old runners in these contests and Brother Tedd heads the market at 7-2. However, he has only scored once from ten starts over fences and that came when odds-on for a three-runner affair at Uttoxeter. Dark Flame has possibilities despite the 736-day absence. He likes it here and goes well fresh but would have preferred quicker going. Morney Wing fell early on his comeback in a Class 2 handicap chase at Sedgefield but is the one I’m going to chance to small stakes. He won the London National over 3m5f here last December, likes soft ground and will be staying on when the rest have had enough in what should be a truly-run contest. His full course record reads 3341 (1-4).
