ABACADABRAS (1.00 Fairyhouse)

It’s very difficult to make the transition from maiden hurdle winner to Grade 1 hurdle winner in a single step, with only 19 horse successful from a sample of 211 in Britain and Ireland since the beginning of 2002. Backing these runners blind would have resulted in a level stakes loss of £93.86 to £1.00. Gordon Elliott has won just once from 13 runners under these conditions and it could be worth opposing Envoi Allen, odds-on for the Grade 1 Royal Band Novice Hurdle after scoring impressively in a Down Royal maiden hurdle on his jumps debut.

He’s hugely talented, having gone four from four in national hunt flat races (including the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham festival) but if he’s to be vulnerable this winter it will be in this contest. Embittered and Midnight Run also won maiden hurdles on their latest starts and I’m going to side with ABACADABRAS, who is now two from two over hurdles after scoring impressively in Grade 3 company at Navan last-time out. The last four Royal Bond winners prepped in a Grade 3 contest, two in that same Navan event.
