Top tipster Andrew Mount has four selections across three races at Newcastle on Thursday night
I’m keen to oppose 7-4 second favourite Deep Impression here, as trainer Mark Johnston has a poor record with his first-time visored runners and his forcing style could be an issue if the forecast headwind materialises. Jack Of Trades is the obvious alternative though is priced accordingly and I’d rather chance Richard Fahey’s handicap debutant MUSAYTIR. He ran respectably at Southwell last time and his yard’s handicap debutants have a good record here (+£12.75), albeit the profits tends to come from the juveniles.
GINGER MAX – 7.00 Newcastle
GINGER MAX proved unsuited to the Fibresand on his Southwell debut last time, trailing home last of six. The turning track probably didn’t suit either and he’s best judged on his straight-track handicap figures, without headgear, of 1134 (2-4), with the third place excusable as he found 5f on the sharp side. He’s yet to race on Tapeta but progeny of Garswood are profitable to back blind here or at Wolverhampton (+£62.88 to a £1 level stake at SP), with those aged 3+ winning eight of their 47 starts (17% strike-rate) for a profit of £64.00. In-form Richard Fahey’s seven Garswood/Tapeta runners have recorded figures of 5412233, with the winner at 16-1 and placed efforts at 33-1 and 16-1.
KLOPP & MONDAMMEJ – 7.30 Newcastle
Anthony Brittain has won with three of his last four runners in a first-time visor (20-1, 18-1 and 6-1) and it could be worth siding with KLOPP who wears the headgear in this 5f handicap. Like most from this yard, Klopp goes well after a very recent outing, so can be forgiven his poor effort over course and distance last time, as it came on the back of a five-week break. He won here on his penultimate start (after a break of just five days) and his previous runs in firs-time headgear have been encouraging, winning in a hood for tonight’s jockey and running fourth in cheekpieces. His full all-weather record when returned to the track within a fortnight reads 125152140621 (4-12), improving to 111421 (3-5) at 5f only. He has often gone well at this time of year, scoring on January 25th last year and on the 16th in 2019.
Stablemate MONDAMMEJ was a surprise winner over 6f here on his debut in November and was narrowly beaten when 5-6 favourite in a match over the same trip and track next time. Dropping in trip in a first-time hood could help this progressive but quirky sort (he played up before the start in each of those two runs) and he’s worth a saver.
