Top tipster Andrew Mount head to Newamrket’s July meeting and Chepstow for his four bets on Thursday
DARK REGARD & EXCEPTIONAL– 3.35 Newmarket
We’re back on the July course at Newmarket today and the stalls are far side, putting those drawn high against the far side rail. However, the GoingStick suggests that the ground is quicker on the nearside (where those draw low will race) and I don’t want to dismiss the chances of low-drawn runners in the 6f heritage handicap. Mark Johnston has a great record with his handicappers at this venue and DARK REGARD (stall 2 of 20) looks over-priced. She disappointed at Haydock on Sunday, finishing last of the seven runners, but was always prominent into the headwind and raced more towards the stands’ side which was not ideal. The deep ground wouldn’t have helped either. She also reserves his best efforts for bigger fields, recording form figures of 11141 (4-5) in fields of ten or more runners, with the defeat excusable as she missed the break from a poor wide draw in Jovial’s Lingfield race (the winner is now rated 18lb higher).
EXCEPTIONAL (stall 9) was beaten under a penalty when the 5-6 favourite for a 7f handicap on the Rowley Mile last time but was drawn in the middle of the track in stall 2 (winner and runner-up drawn 9 and 11 of 11) and was given too much to do on her first start at the trip. She’d romped home at Pontefract on her reappearance, making it two from three at today’s trip, with the defeat at Royal Ascot last year.
COMMUNIQUE – 4.10 Newmarket
COMMUNIQUE ran as though his comeback run were needed when fifth to Dashing Willoughby on the Rowley Mile and his attacking style was no help at Ascot next time. His Newmarket record, after a recent run, reads 1111 (4-4) with the wins split evenly between the two tracks. He won this race 12 months ago and I’m happy to side with him rather than the reappearing favourite Enbihaar, whose trainer’s last ten winners in this race were beaten.
THE DALEY EXPRESS – 5.30 Chepstow
THE DALEY EXPRESS has only beaten one rival from two outings this season but perhaps both were needed and he’s taken to bounce back in this seven-runner handicap. The small field is a key ingredient to his chances, as is the return to turf. His turf record in fields of seven or fewer runners reads 161411 (4-6) and he won’t be inconvenienced by the recent rain.
