AFRICAN DANCE – (1.25 Ludlow, 0.5pts e/w 10/1)
AFRICAN DANCE raced in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail when third in a Fakenham bumper in February, doing well to hold on for third place. He encounters quicker ground on his hurdles and seasonal debut, but I wasn’t expecting him to be a double-figure price and he is worth a small interest.
PETER’S PORTRAIT – (2.00 Ludlow, 1pt win 10/3)
Charlie Longsdon’s chasers often respond well to first-time cheekpieces, winning 14 of their 63 starts (22.2% strike-rate) for a profit of £20.35 to a £1 level stake at SP. PETER’S PORTRAIT could only finish seventh of 14 when favourite at Hexham on his recent chase and seasonal debut but ran well second-time out at Huntingdon last term and the switch to this easier track on better ground could be the key.
HAN SOLO BERGER – (4.05 Wolverhampton, 1pt e/w 10/1
HAN SOLO BERGER was only 15th of 20 at Doncaster last time but struggles to handle traffic and will be happier in this smaller field. 11 runners seems to be his cut-off point…
12 or more runners: 9296987006800 (0-13)
11 or fewer runners: 314182722281111233 (6-18)
At today’s trip of 5f, his record in fields of 11 or less reads 342221111233 (4-12) suggesting that he’ll be hard to kick out of the frame.
MAKE GOOD – (4.50 Navan, 1pt e/w 13/2)
MAKE GOOD (a non-runner when I tipped him at Fairyhouse two days ago) turned a good draw into a bad one by switching to race in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail at Limerick last time, doing well to finish fourth of the 14 runners. The five-year-old has yet to win from ten starts for his current trainer but will appreciate the step back up in trip and the forecast rain won’t inconvenience.
ILLUSTRATOR – (5.30 Chelmsford,1;5pts win 13/2)
I wrote the following about ILLUSTRATOR in Racing & Football Outlook after he made his debut at Wolverhampton in June… ‘Juvenile newcomer ILLUSTRATOR did well to finish a one-length third in the opening 6f maiden after blowing the start and running green. His sire has had winners at 40-1 and 100-30 from just four runners on Polytrack and a switch of surface could help.’ He’s been off the track since which is a slight worry but his stable is flying and he’s worth chancing to defy the absence.
FAIR POWER – (7.45 Wolverhampton, 1pt win 9/2)
Progeny of Power do well at Wolverhampton, winning 14 of their 76 starts (18.4% strike-rate) for a profit of £35.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. In races over 9.4f or further they have a six from 16 record for a profit of £52.00. FAIR POWER contributed one of those wins (11-1) on his course debut in December of last year and his only subsequent visit to this venue saw him run fourth at 12-1 from a poor draw. He looks well berthed tonight and Oisin Murphy takes the ride.
