Top tipster Andrew Mount has four selections for the afternoon cards at Newmarket and Pontefract on Thursday
ENVEGA – 1.30 Pontefract
Ralph Beckett gas a good strike-rate with his 2yos at Pontefract, scoring with eight of the 21 runners for a small loss to level stakes at SP. Those drawn in stall 7 or lower won eight of their 16 starts for a small profit. More interestingly, ENVEGA is having her second run in a nursery and her trainer’s record with such types since 2013 stands at 13 winners from 47 runners (29.8% strike-rate) for a profit of £38.08 to a £1 level stake at SP. This filly ran a cracker to finish an 8-1 fourth to Valorant at Sandown in a 7f nursery last time, shaping as though the return to a longer trip would help (she was second over 8.6f at Wolverhampton on her penultimate start). This stiff 1m looks ideal.
MARK OF THE MAN – 1.50 Newmarket
MARK OF THE MAN has improved since switched to turf, winning a 7f Chepstow maiden and a Glorious Goodwood nursery over the same trip. He lost his unbeaten turf record when sixth at York next time but kept on strongly to finish about three lengths behind the winner, suggesting that the step up to a mile were needed. He ran over the longer trip at Doncaster last time, finishing a close-up third, and he looks over-priced today.
FRANKEL’S STORM – 2.40 Pontefract
Making the running on the round course at Doncaster rarely leads to success and it was no surprise to see Mark Johnston's 10-1 shot FRANKEL'S STORM trail home last of five in the 1m4f fillies' handicap at the St Leger meeting earlier this month. Her two other domestic runs over 1m or further resulted in victories at Carlisle and Pontefract and she can bounce back at this more suitable venue where she looks set to receive an easy time of things in front.
ABATE – 4.20 Pontefract
ABATE, well drawn in stall 2, did third best of those ridden patiently when sixth at Thirsk last time. The two hold-up horses who finished in front of him both acquitted themselves well next time, third home Our Little Pony finished a 50-1 eighth of 16 in Listed company at Ayr and fifth placed Buniann was short-headed when 9-1 for a 15-runner handicap at Redcar. Abate was drawn wider than that pair in stall 12, which was another disadvantage. His handicap record in Class 4 or lower company since gelded now reads 12416 (2-5).
