Top tipster Andrew Mount was among the winner again on Monday and has six selections on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood
SKY DEFENDER & *MAYDANNY – 1.45 Goodwood
Mark Johnston has a fine record in the classier handicaps at Goodwood and not just at the summer festival. Since 2012, had we backed all his handicappers at this venue in Class 2 company we would have won 34 of our 211 bets (16.1% strike-rate) for a profit of £90.90 to a £1 level stake at SP. A great return, as he often had multiple representatives. He has two runners in the 1m2f Unibet You’re On Handicap and I’m happy to side with both MAYDANNY and SKY DEFENDER. The former, up in trip after his Newmarket flop, is worth another chance to build on the promise of his best-of-the-far-side-bunch seventh of 22 in the Silver Royal Hunt Cup and the latter had little chance from stall 22 of 22 at York last week. The return to a sharp/undulating track will suit this Bath and Epsom winner.
PAINLESS POTTER – 2.15 Goodwood
I’m keen to oppose Battleground in the 7f Group 2 Veuve Clicquot Stakes, as the form of his Chesham win doesn’t look strong (his main market rival trailed home a well beaten last after the race reportedly came too soon) and he looks too short at around the 11-8 mark. Devious Company holds obvious claims but, at a bigger price, I’m going to side with PAINLESS POTTER despite his maiden status. He was a fine 40-1 third at Kempton in Army Of India’s maiden on his debut – a race that worked out extremely well – and he followed that with a 40-1 fifth of 15 at Royal Ascot, where again shaping as though the step up from 6f were needed.
SAFE VOYAGE – 2.45 Goodwood
SAFE VOYAGE is proving very difficult to beat over a turning 7f in Britain, recording form figures of 11111121 (7-8) since 2017, with the sole defeat by a neck to Space Blues on his reappearance at Haydock last month. Space Blues franked that form by landing a Group 3 at Longchamp next time and Safe Voyage went one better at Epsom. He faces his old rival again here but is better drawn (stall 1 as opposed to stall 10) and can reverse the form.
GLASSES UP – 3.30 Ayr
Ayr expert GLASSES UP goes especially well at this time of year, recording form figures in June/July at this venue of 614113544121 (5-12) for a profit of £40.25 to a £1 level stake at SP. When racing between eight and 21 days since his latest outing, as he does here, his Ayr summer record becomes 11154121 (5-8). His patient running style has been strongly favoured here of late and I thought he’d be favourite for this, not as big as 7-1.
FINAL VENTURE – 3.45 Goodwood
There’s a huge amount of early pace in the 5f Qatar Handicap and the race could be set up for a finisher. Celsius (stall 10 of 11), whose 5f record since gelded reads 12111012 (5-8) is a must for Placepot punters but he’s not as well drawn as FINAL VENTURE (stall 2) who can storm home down the middle of the track. He was up against a strong draw bias at Ascot last time, doing best of those to race in the centre and finding only the four highest-drawn runners, who all raced stands’ side, too good. Two others to race in that centre group at Ascot Tone The Barone and Lahore – have won recently at 18-1 and 12-1 respectively.
