Top tipster Andrew Mount kicks off Chester’s May meeting with three fancies
SHOWALONG – 2.45 Chester, 2pts win - 5/2)
SHOWALONG clocked a fast time when fourth at Thirsk on his reappearance and both of his previous defeats were followed by wins on soft ground. His wins gave come on straight courses (Redcar and York) but his sire has a good record here with runners drawn in stall 4 or lower – form figures of 114251416531 (5-12) for a profit of £11.77 to a £1 level stake at SP – and the recent rain has boosted his chance. Stablemate Copper Night win this from the same draw in 2017 and, like that one, Showalong could be well ahead of the handicapper.
YOUTH SPIRIT – (3.15 Chester, 1pt win - 7/1)
Andrew Balding’s runners show a good profit at Chester, with 78 winners from 380 runners (20.5% strike-rate) for a profit of £66.89 at SP (17.6% profit on turnover) and YOUTH SPIRIT is taken to cause a minor upset in the Group 3 Chester Vase. He was an eyecatcher at Newmarket on his reappearance where he was poorly drawn, ridden patiently and challenged wide on his way to a 12-1 fourth in a 1m1f Listed contest.
That run, his first since last July, was probably needed and he scored on soft ground at the second time of asking last term. It’s hard to see how he’s a bigger price than Fancy Man who was behind him at Newmarket despite a better draw and a prominent ride on the favoured rail.
PIVOTING – (3.45 Chester, 2pt win, 15/2)
Tim Easterby’s Chester May meeting record in the past ten years doesn’t look all that great (four winners from 70 runners) but most had no luck with the draw and he’s three from 19 with those drawn in stall 4 or lower and three from 15 (+£4.50 to a £1 level stake at SP) in handicaps. Those who’d had a run within the past six weeks clocked figures of 6129328190212 and as well as Showalong in the 2.45 race I want to support the yard’s PIVOTING (stall 3 of 11) in this 6f handicap.
He beat only one home on his comeback at Pontefract last month but was a 40-1 shot on his first start for six month and raced on the outside of the track from his poor draw in stall 6 of 7 (winner drawn 1). He was narrowly beaten on his second run last term and signed off with a 6f soft-ground win on a left-handed track. His trainer won this in 2014 with The Hooded Claw and his only subsequent runner ran a blinder in mid-division after being hampered from the worst of the draw in stall 12 of 12.
