CANDACE – (12.25 Yarmouth, 0.5 pt e/w, 18/1)

CANDACE started as the 4-1 favourite when making her debut in a 7f novice contest at Redcar 17 days ago but trailed home 12th of the 14 runners. However, she completely blew the start that day and could never got involved over a trip and track that typically favours prominent racers. Richard Hannon 2yos, beaten when fancied on their debuts (from the front two in the betting), have a good record at the second time of asking, winning 38 of their 120 starts since 2015 (31.7% strike-rate) for a profit of £72.79 to a £1 level stake at SP. Only six of those runners had their second outing in October or later and four won for a profit of £34.50. She’ll need to have learnt plenty in a short space of time but those stats suggest the early 18-1 could be on the generous side and she’s worth a speculative interest.

ANGEL PALANAS – (1.55 Fairyhouse 2pts win, 7/4)

I’m slightly flummoxed as to why ANGEL PALANAS, on a four-timer after three handicap wins, is being risked in a rare Irish claimer. The third of those wins came at Leopardstown last Friday where, a on a track that was massively favouring early pace, he sat further back than ideal but still scored in good style. The speed figure he received for that victory towers over the last-time out efforts of his rivals and generally available 7-4 looks generous.

MAKE GOOD – (4.45 Fairyhouse 1pt e/w, 8/1

MAKE GOOD turned a good draw into a bad one by switching to race in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail at Limerick last time, doing well to finish fourth of the 14 runners. The five-year-old has yet to win from ten starts for his current trainer but will appreciate the step back up in trip and the forecast rain won’t inconvenience.

DUBAI WELCOME – (7.40 Kempton 1pt win, 6/1

There are a couple of interesting statistical angles that suggest this 1m4f handicap is worth playing. The first is opposing 11-4 favourite Durrell and 100-30 second favourite Arabian King because both won on Fibresand last time. Southwell winners have a terrible recent record when bidding to follow up at Kempton, scoring just five times from 91 starts since 2013 (5.5% strike-rate) for a huge loss of £70.81 to a £1 level stake at SP. Take on the market leaders with the Saeed Bin Suroor-trained DUBAI WELCOME. He ran poorly in first-time cheekpieces at Sandown last time but has been gelded since and will appreciate the return to this venue where he finished second on his penultimate start. The yard’s runners in second-time cheekpieces, who were beaten last-time out, won 13 of their 46 starts since 2010 (28.3%) for a profit of £19.06.
