NEWBURY

I discussed the merits of FUNAMBULE SIVOLA (1.25) and PANIC ATTACK (3.05) in my ‘Stat Attack’ video on the GG website but both are a little short to recommend as single bets (7-4 from 5-2 and 11-8 from 9-4 respectively). I wouldn’t put you off doing the win double or using them in multiple bets though. Perhaps with BROOMFIELD BURG (4.05), another mentioned in the video, if you fancy a treble.

INSTANT REPLAY (2.55 Newcastle, 1pt win 10/1)

INSTANT REPLAY trailed home 25 lengths behind the leader in fourth place when 9-1 for a 2m handicap chase at Doncaster last time but his cause not helped by a bad mistake at the fourth fence. It wasn't a bad effort in the circumstances, especially as the Brian Ellison yard was quiet at the time, and he tends to come good at this time of year.

His record in January and February reads 1111 (4-4) and his stable is in great form at present. His prominent running style is something of a concern on a track that was eating front-runners alive at the ‘Bumpers for Jumpers’ meeting on January 8th but he’s still worth a small interest.

ALHAJJAJ (5.15 Dundalk, 1pt each-way 11/1)

ALHAJJAJ ran respectably over an inadequate 1m here in early December, finishing a 33-1 eighth of 13, and often runs well at this time of year. His three wins coming in January and February.

Those wins came on 25 January, 15 February and 21 February, so it’s possible we’re getting there a little too soon (he’s also entered here on Friday) but he’s still worth supporting at double-figure odds. His latest win came over course and distance off an 8lb higher mark and his prominent style will be an asset on recent evidence.

FINAL LEGACY (7.30 Southwell, 1pt each-way 11/1)

FINAL LEGACY was a big eyecatcher over course and distance last winter, running well from a poor high draw on multiple occasions. She ended up winning twice – off marks of 47 and 53 – before struggling post-lockdown like all of Derek Shaw’s inmates.

Having failed to saddle a winner from 98 runners during the June to November period, the yard has now turned the corner, with a winner at Wolverhampton just after Christmas and three more (from 15 runners) so far in 2021. Final Legacy, well drawn in stall 4 today, has been dropped 3lb to a mark of 50 after failing to beat a rival over course and distance in early November and, having shown good form at this time last year after a similar break, can get back to winning ways.

BRANDY STATION (7.30 Southwell, 1pt each-way 11/1)

I’ve saved on BRANDY STATION (stall 2), who did well to finish a 22-1 fourth from stall 12 over course and distance last time. He should encounter the required strong pace.
