Top tipster Andrew Mount hit the one-two in the 1.45 at Goodwood yesterday (the forecast paid over 175-1) and he also struck with his NAP, Glasses Up at Ayr (4-1 from 7-1). He has six more selections across four races at Glorious Goodwood, Galway and Thirsk on Wednesday
GLENTIES – 2.15 Goodwood
The Mark Johnston-trained GLENTIES finally broke his duck at Windsor last time, looking a different horse for the switch to more patient tactics, and can follow up in this 1m4f handicap. He’d caught the eye on Tapeta in his novice runs, doing well against pace biases at Newcastle and Wolverhampton, then ran a cracking third on his handicap debut/reappearance at Haydock in June, doing best of those to race up with the pace. A couple of small-field disappointments followed before that comfortable Windsor success but this test will be right up his street and he could run up a sequence now that the penny has dropped. He’s also entered here on Friday and at Pontefract on the same day. I’ve saved on stablemate King’s Caper.
TORO STRIKE & MAGICAL WISH – 4.20 Goodwood
TORO STRIKE’S 66-1 fifth of 22 in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot has received several boosts and he can run off the same mark in the 7f Theo Fennell Handicap. He’s better drawn (stall 9 of 20) than the favourite – Society Lion, who is stuck out wide in stall 16 – and he won’t be inconvenienced by the drop in trip.
I also want to side with Richard Hannon’s MAGICAL WISH, nicely drawn in stall 2. The four-year-old hasn’t enjoyed the rub of the green in three starts since his Lingfield win in the spring – he was up against a draw bias when mid-division in the Silver Wokingham, on the receiving end of a pace bias when ninth at Epsom and then met trouble at York last time. The likely strong pace will suit and his trainer is bidding for a third straight win in this contest.
JUNGLE SPEED – 5.00 Thirsk
JUNGLE SPEED was a huge eyecatcher at Newcastle in February on his British debut, finishing third at 40-1 in a 6f handicap for Ivan Furtado after making the running into the headwind. Seven furlongs on Fibresand proved unsuitable next time but he ran a nice race on his comeback and debut for David Loughnane when a front-running fourth at Newbury, again over 6f. The drop to the minimum trip could suit and he can make all.
EFFERNOCK FIZZ & DINARD ROSE – 5.15 Galway
EFFERNOCK FIZZ looks the lone pace in this two-mile mares’ handicap hurdle and she could prove hard to pass. She really caught the eye at Kilbeggan on her latest outing, making the running on the ‘dead’ rail and doing well to hold on for third (about two lengths behind the winner). Quick ground suits and the early 14-1 is generous.
Four-year-olds have a good recent record in this contest, winning four times from 13 runners in the past ten years, including at 33-1. DINARD ROSE will be fit after a couple of spins at the Curragh and she usually runs well at this time of year. She's also worth a small interest.
