Top tipster Andrew Mount has four selections at Beverley, Cork and Yarmouth on Wednesday
MAKE A PROMISE – 1.30 Cork
MAKE A PROMISE had no chance at Limerick five day ago after making the running on the ‘dead’ rail on ground descried as ‘soft/heavy’, running much better than her finishing position suggests. She was also poorly drawn when down the field in a big-field Curragh maiden on soft ground the time before and will be suited by today’s quicker going. It was officially ‘good’ when she was just touched off at Naas on her debut and she’s worth chancing to bounce back to that form in the first-time cheekpieces.
ENCOUNTER ORDER – 2.35 Yarmouth
It was a front-runner’s benefit on the straight course at Yarmouth yesterday and with a stiff breeze behind them today it could be even harder to come from off the pace. Ready To Venture heads the market at around 5-6 for this 7f maiden but she may have been a shade flattered by her debut Newmarket second as the pace collapsed and the first three home came from the rear. The time was nothing special whereas ENCOUNTER ORDER clocked a good figure when sixth to Naval Crown under a more prominent ride at York on his debut last month. There’s no guarantee that the favourite will be ridden patiently again but the form of Encounter Order’s York run is working out well, with the runner-up, third and fourth all winning next time and he looks the likely pace angle under Silvestre De Sousa.
KING RAGNAR – 4.20 Yarmouth
This 1m handicap often goes to a 3yo (six winners and four places from 29 runners in the past nine renewals, whereas older horses are just three from 47. Glen Force heads the market but he’s only scored once from six starts since his debut, despite starting as favourite on each occasion. He can race freely and I’m not convinced that the return to a straight course is ideal. Roger Varian has sent out two winners and a second from three recent runners in this contest and the two who remained with the Newmarket handler both went on to better things – Zabeel Prince won this off a mark of 86 in 2017 and is currently rated 110, Certificate was rated 85 when unable to catch the all-the-way winner in 2014, going down by a length, and went on to achieve a mark of 110. KING RAGNAR clocked a good time when scoring at Leicester in first-time cheekpieces in July and ran to a similar level when placed in Class 2 company at Glorious Goodwood next time. Soft ground was probably against him when third without the cheekpieces at Redcar on his latest outing and he can bounce back on today’s quicker surface now the headgear goes back on.
GINGER JAM – 4.35 Beverley
GINGER JAM, poorly drawn and probably outclassed when down the field in the Portland at Doncaster last week, can bounce back at his beloved Beverley. He scored here on his penultimate start, taking his course figures to 11111 (5-5) and is a bigger price than I expected given his obvious credentials.
