PEMBROKE – 1pt e/w (8/1 generally)

The County Hurdle has been something of a benefit for Dan Skelton and Willie Mullins in recent years, with these two top trainers taking eight of the last 11 renewals between them. Backing all their runners in that period would have made us a profit of £70.25 to a £1 level stake at SP. Skelton’s six-year-old PEMBROKE looks by far the most interesting one. The son of Blue Bresil found the extended 2m4f trip stretching his stamina when runner-up to Rock My Way in Grade 2 novice hurdle company here on Trials Day and who will relish a strongly-run two miles on slow ground. I’ve saved on stablemate FAVOIR, 9lb lower in the weights than when 11th to State Man in this race last year.

ELDORADO ALLEN – 0.5pt e/w, (100-1+ with the firms paying four or more places) (Sky Bet go 100-1 first five)
CONFLATED – 1pt e/w, 14-1 with the firms paying four places

When ELDORADO ALLEN crossed the line in second place behind Bravemansgame in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on his comeback I immediately wrote ‘Welsh National’ in my tracker. He went to Haydock for the Betfair Chase next time, rather than Chepstow, and ran another solid race, finishing runner-up to Protektorat. The right-handed track was no use to him when fourth in the King George and I’m also happy to forgive last month’s Denman Chase fifth to Zanza, as he raced too close to the pace in first-time cheekpieces and the ground was faster than preferred. He’s run cracking races at the last two Cheltenham festivals – chasing home Shishkin when 33-1 for the 2021 Arkle and placing at 14-1 behind Allaho in last year’s Ryanair Chase – and he’s got to be worth a small each-way interest in the Gold Cup.

CONFLATED still looks to be improving at the age of nine – his five best RPRs (Racing Post Ratings) have come in the past 12 months and he’s especially effective over fences on left-handed tracks, recording form figures of 131U11F21 (5-9). Those with good memories may recall that I recommended him each-way in the Ryanair Chase last year in which he was staying on well in a dispute of second place when falling late on. His jumping, while still not foot-perfect, seems more assured this season and he can also be supported each-way.

IMPERVIOUS – 2pts win (9/4 bet365, 2/1 generally)

IMPERVIOUS maintained her 100% chase record with a half-length verdict over Journey With Me in Grade 3 company at Punchestown last time and that form was boosted last weekend when the runner-up went one better at Naas. The pair pulled a massive 22 lengths clear of the third and Impervious and I think she should be favourite now tackling her own sex in the Mares’ Chase, as current market leader Allegorie De Vassey, who jumps markedly out to her right, is likely to struggle on the left-handed track. Impervious has form figures below Grade 1 level of 1116111 (6-7), with the sixth place in a field of 19 when 22-1 for last year’s Dawn Run. She failed to settle that day but her hard-pulling tendency has not re-emerged since she was switched to fences.

COOL SURVIVOR – 1pt e/w (11/2 generally)

The Gordon Elliott-trained COOL SURVIVOR found only Hiddenvalley Lake too good in Grade 3 company at Cork in December and followed that with a fine 25-1 fourth to Wednesday’s Ballymore fourth Good Land at the Dublin Racing Festival. He has winning form on both good and heavy going, so underfoot conditions won’t trouble him when he makes his handicap debut in the Martin Pipe. Horses who ran in Graded company last time are seven from 49 in this race for a profit of £27.00 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners only 2.85).
