HOME BY THE LEE – 2pts win (13/2 generally)
Progeny of the sire Fame And Glory tend to improve with time and had we bet all those aged eight or older, over jumps only, we’d have won 33 of our 268 bets and made a profit of £52.08. Eight-year-old HOME BY THE LEE wasn’t beaten far when a 33-1 sixth in this race last year and has taken off this winter, scoring over an inadequate 2m4f trip when 28-1 for a Grade 2 at Navan in November before his Grade 1 Jack De Bromhead Christmas Hurdle win at Leopardstown. The ground has come right for him, and he looks rock-solid. I’ll also be playing him in the forecast/Exacta with Ashdale Bob, who usually runs a big race when given a left-handed track and slow ground.

STOLEN SILVER – 1pt e/w (25/1 generally)

Early pace is usually the key to the Plate and with front-running reserve Gemirande looking unlikely to get a run, last year’s 18-1 STOLEN SILVER is my pick in the race. The Sam Thomas-trained eight-year-old pulled up when 11-10 favourite for a four-runner handicap chase at Warwick last time but the ground was much faster than preferred and he was reportedly never travelling. His two other chase runs on Cheltenham’s New Course resulted in an impressive win last spring and an 11-1 second to Midnight River on New Year’s Day.

RAPPER – 1pt e/w (25/1 generally)
RAPPER’s record in Class 2 or lower handicaps, after a recent run (within six weeks), stands at 1221135 (3-7), with his last-time out fifth at Sandown an especially eyecatching effort. It was desperately difficult to come from off the pace that day and his nine-length defeat, doing second best of the hold-up horses, was worthy of a major upgrade. He was nine lengths ahead of another hold-up horse, Larry, who ran second at Newbury next time and ninth-home Flegmatik, beaten by 27 lengths and also ridden patiently, ran second by a neck to Our Power (pair clear) in the valuable Coral Trophy Handicap Chase at Kempton next time. Rapper scored impressively in first-time cheekpieces over course and distance on his penultimate start and now wears a first-time visor.
