4.01 Redcar – DANZAN (1pt E/W – 12/1 generally)

It was a big advantage to race up with the pace towards the stands’ side rail in the 7f handicap won by Wobwobwob at Catterick on October 15th and the race was dominated by high draws, with the first six drawn 14, 11, 5, 10, 12 and 13. DANZAN had the ideal running style but his draw made life difficult and he could never get on the faster strip of ground. His 16-1 third was a solid effort and he ran well over the same course and distance just ten days later, again finishing third and doing best of those who raced away from the favoured stands’ rail strip. He signed off with a fine 11-1 third to Baradar (placed in the Lincoln on his comeback) at Doncaster and he has plenty of form when fresh. Tim Easterby’s veteran has gone well first time out before, is well drawn towards the far rail in stall 3 and looks worth an each-way interest. It might be prudent to save on Mick Appleby’s FAME AND ACCLAIM, whose new handler does so well at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other yards.

4.05 Kempton – MAX MEYHEM (1pt win – 4/1 Bet365, 7/2 generally)

I wrote the following about MAX MAYHEM in the Racing Post Weekender after his third place against the pace bias at Dundalk last October…

‘Max Mayhem fared best of the closers when third in a fast time on his all-weather debut and remains open to improvement

It paid to be on the front end in the William Hill Extra Places Every Day Handicap at Dundalk last Friday night, with the first six home described by the Racing Post as ‘prominent, soon raced in second’, ‘prominent’, midfield’, ‘in touch with leaders, prominent halfway’, ‘in touch with leaders’ and ‘prominent, soon led’. Joseph O’Brien’s top weight kept on well from his midfield sit to finish third, a length a half behind the winner and almost four lengths clear of the next finisher to come from off the pace. The four-year-old was making his all-weather debut, clocked a good time in defeat and should have more to offer on Polytrack.’

…the son of New Bay changed hands for 42,000gns after that effort and looks interesting on his debut for in-form Kevin Philippart De Foy. His new handler has only had two ex-Joseph O’Brien runners in his care before including Vafortino, who ran second by a neck on his yard debut before landing the Victoria Cup next time out.
