2.05 Newmarket (SATURDAY) – DEVIL’S ANGEL (1pt E/W – 25/1 generally)

Before I crack on with Friday’s tips, I want to mention one running at Newmarket on Saturday – DEVIL’S ANGEL in the Grey Horse Handicap (2.05). Jedd O’Keeffe’s veteran was unlucky in this race two years ago, rearing at the start and doing best of the closers in a two-length fifth. He’s 1lb lower this time around and can usually be relied upon to run his race at this time of year, winning four of his seven handicap starts in July/August on good/faster turf or the all-weather for a profit of £63.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. The prospect of rain is of some concern but, at the available price, he’s worth backing now.

14:05 JenningsBet Grey Horse Handicap

4.20 Newbury – FLYING SECRET (1pt E/W – 4/1 Bet365, 10/3 generally) + CAPTAIN CUDDLES (1pt E/W – 7/1 Bet365, 5/1 generally)

Newbury’s straight course usually favours prominent racers but there’s an awful lot of early pace in this 7f handicap and it could be set up for a closer. Step forward the consistent FLYING SECRET, whose turf record over 6f-7f since gelded reads 2311353 (2-7), with the latest win coming over course and distance off a 2lb lower mark. He can race keenly but the likely strong gallop will help in that regard.

Richard Hannon’s CAPTAIN CUDDLES is likely to be ridden prominently but he impressed in the paddock prior to his last-time-out 33-1 third at Ascot, his first run since gelded, and he could take another step forward here. His trainer does well with runners having their second start since gelded, especially with those who recorded a top-six finish last time out. Since 2018, he’s scored with 24 of the 106 qualifiers for a profit of £56.52 to a £1 level stake at SP.

16:20 Christopher Smith Associates LLP Handicap

7.02 Cork – HELPMEOUT (1pt win – 4/1 Bet365, 10/3 generally)

HELPMEOUT fared second best of the closers when a solid 16-1 fourth in a 1m fillies/mares handicap at the Curragh last Sunday, making ground on the slowest part of the track. I was hoping that her next run would come on a left-handed track – her best efforts have come at Leopardstown, Naas and Navan – but today’s straight 7f shouldn’t be a problem, especially as she’s drawn with a running rail to her left.

19:02 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap
