POTAPOVA – 1pt win (12/1 generally)

I’m slightly surprised to see POTAPOVA at such a big price ahead of her reappearance in this Group 2 contest as the Sir Michael Stoute-trained filly goes well when fresh. She won by six and a half lengths when 5-1 for a Chelmsford novice contest on her sole juvenile outing and bolted up at prohibitive odds at Redcar on her three-year-old debut. Last term, she was beaten by just a head in a 1m Listed contest at Kempton on her seasonal return, a fine effort given that she blew the start and raced keenly. Faster ground would have been preferable but there’s compensation in her price and the Stoute yard has started the new campaign in good fashion.

WESTERTON – 1pt win (9/2 bet365, 11/4 generally)

WESTERTON had shown promise from off the pace over 7f at Doncaster and Haydock on his first two starts, finishing fourth and fifth respectively, and, like most progeny of Belardo, improved for the step up to 1m when runner-in a Nottingham maiden last backend. Alan King’s charge was the only one of the first five home to come from off the pace and had 13 lengths to spare over the next hold-up horses, Sir Michael Stoute’s Survival. He’s been gelded over the winter, the step up to 1m2f will suit on his handicap debut and his patient style (assuming that’s the plan) will be an asset at this venue.

VALLAMOREY – 1pt e/w (16/1 Bet365, 12/1 generally)

The market for the 1m2f novice stakes at Newcastle on October 25th was dominated by Charlie Appleby’s 2-11 shot Ruling Dynasty and, with only five runners, the race had an ideal shape for each-way betting. The Gosden’s 9-2 second-favourite Sobregand was priced up on who trained him rather than what he’d achieved in his two previous runs, so the each-way vultures circled around Chris Fairhurst’s VALLAMOREY, backed from 66-1 into 22-1. The four-year-old had been ridden patiently when catching the eye at Ripon and over course and distance previously but Jason Hart had her prominent before taking up the running three out, tactics that usually result in defeat on Newcastle’s round course. She weakened into third place, with the favourite winning easily and the patiently-ridden Elshaameq grabbing second. Vallamorey’s effort was worth a major upgrade, and she looks very interesting now making her handicap debut and running against her own sex.
