GOOD LUCK FOX – Nottingham 2.20 – (1pt win – 9/1 generally)

Having discussed the bias to frontrunners in Nottingham sprints prior to Night On Earth’s all-the-way win the other day, it might seem strange that I’m advocating a bet on a hold-up horse in this 5f handicap. However, there’s plenty of early pace on here and it could be set up for GOOD LUCK FOX. He could only finish ninth of ten at Thirsk last time but was drawn away from the action and it’s safe to ignore that effort. His latest win came off today’s mark of 68 last summer and I think offers of around 8-1 underestimate his chances.

NACHO – Wolverhampton 2.45 – (1pt win – 8/1 bet365, 6/1 generally)

NACHO’s full course record reads 228414071671 (3-12), improving to 224140161 (3-9) over 5f only. He’s been beaten three times on turf since May’s course and distance success and can bounce back this afternoon, despite stall 8 being a little wider than preferred.

EQUIANO SPRINGS – Newmarket 5.45 – (1pt each-way – 7/1 generally)

Tom Tate’s veteran EQUIANO SPRINGS was sent off at 18-1 for a 6f handicap at Doncaster on his belated reappearance and shaped well in fourth place, seven lengths behind Recall The Show. Steadied at the start, he could never strike a blow behind the all-the-way winner and would no doubt have needed the run, his first for 232 days. He ran another solid race at York next time, finishing a 33-1 fifth of 20 from a favourable draw. He has a cracking record on tracks with stiff uphill finishes, with eight of his nine handicap wins coming at Newcastle or on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket. He’s also run well at Ascot, Beverley and Pontefract. I took a chance and bet him at Ponty last time, but his wide draw proved difficult to overcome, even in a small field, and he had to settle for a 14-1 fourth after taking a walk in the betting. He’s back at Newmarket today and, while it’s a shame it’s on the July Course and not the Rowley Mile, I still want to have an involvement as he’s 1lb below his last winning mark and James Doyle is a positive booking.

PEROTAN – Cork 7.40 – (2pts win – 9/4 William Hill, 15/8 generally)

PEROTAN was a rare debut winner for the sire Churchill, landing a 1m4f Bellewstown fillies’ maiden at the start of July. Aidan O’Brien’s three-year-old followed up with ease in a 1m6f Listed contest at Down Royal and can continue her progression by landing this 1m4f Group 3. Eight of the last nine winners were aged three, with the sole exception repeat winner Tarnawa in 2020 when COVID might have affected the progress of the classic generation.
