1.30 Cheltenham – THE WOLF (0.5pt E/W – 18/1 William Hill, 16/1 generally)

THE WOLF tends to jump poorly in big fields and it’s no coincidence that his four career wins have come in fields of seven or fewer runners. The veteran has won four of his 16 small-field starts, finishing second on a further four occasions and faces just four rivals today. He’s also had a wind operation since his fifth of 13 at Cheltenham’s October meeting and has run well on his first start back after both previous bouts of wind surgery, finishing second off a mark of 138 to Lord Accord in the most recent of them. He runs off 133 today, will handle the deep ground and looks worth a small each-way play.

2.05 Cheltenham – TORN AND FRAYED (0.5pt E/W – 25/1 BetMGM + BetUK, 22/1 generally)

Stage Star is the blindingly obvious one but is priced accordingly and I’d rather play TORN AND FRAYED to small each-way stakes. Nigel Twiston-Davies has a fine recent record in this race, winning it in 2022, 2018, 2015 and 2014 (he wasn’t represented last year) and the ten-year-old, a faller in the Paddy Power Gold Cup on his comeback, ran with credit in the December Gold Cup over course and distance last time, staying on into a 28-1 sixth of 12 behind Fugitif. The smaller field will suit, and he could go well despite racing from out of the handicap proper.

2.20 Musselburgh – CRACKING DESTINY (1pt win – 11/2 William Hill, 9/2 generally)

Musselburgh expert CRACKING DESTINY took his course figures to 1221 (2-4) when scoring at odds of 9-1 in a five-runner Class 2 handicap chase here 54 days ago (tipped in this column). His two Musselburgh defeats were great efforts – he went down by a head to Nuts Well in this race four years ago in the first of them and found only the classy Greanteen too good in the other – and he’s worth a bet to follow up, despite the ground being slower than preferred.
