Andrew Mount’s Best Bets – Monday, January 17

Top tipster Andrew Mount went close with his sole selection on Sunday and starts the week with three selections across two races

I want to oppose 7-4 favourite Tiny Tantrum here, as he looked flattered when finishing second over course and distance last time where he raced wide on the better ground. He’s a seven-race maiden whereas MIDNIGHT MARY is two from four since fitted with a tongue-tie. She ran well over trip and track at about this time last year – finishing fourth at 10-1 – and she drops back down to Class 5 level after disappointing at Warwick last time.

Of even greater interest is the veteran AVITHOS, who usually goes well at this time of year. Her record in Class 5 handicaps in January, February or March, when she’s had a recent outing, stands at 2191611 (4-7) for a profit of £21.00. The runner-up effort came by just one length at 33-1, the ninth on the 30th of March when coming to the end of her peak period after a very busy spell and the sixth when 22-1 in a field of 18. She’s 1-1 at this venue and she’s finished progressively closer to the winner in each of her three runs this term, going down by just over ten lengths in a 12-1 fifth of 12 at Lingfield last month.

LEVEROCK LASS usually needs her first run of the season, so it was encouraging to see her run second over trip and track on her comeback. The ground was probably too quick for her when she finished modest third at Hereford last time, though the two that beat her are useful – winner Kapga De Lily is hard to beat on right-handed tracks and ten-length runner-up went close at Wincanton next time. She won third time out last term and could be in receipt of an easy lead.

Today’s Best Bets

Midnight Mary – 1pt win – 2.50 Fakenham (3-1 generally)

Avithos – 1.5pts win – 2.50 (7-1 bet365)

Leverock Lass – 2pts win – 3.10 Chepstow (4-1 bet365, 7-2 generally)
