THANKYUAPPRECIATE – 1.50 Ayr (1pt each-way – 16/1 generally)

THANKUPAPPRECIATE, an 80-1 newcomer trained by Nigel Tinkler, ran an eyecatching race to finish fifth of the 15 runners in a 6f restricted novice at Thirsk late last month.

He travelled well in rear before switching far side of centre for a run, not the place to be. He was considerately handled by Tony Hamilton but still finished within four lengths of the winner.

It’s possible that we won’t see the best of him until he goes handicapping but progeny of his sire Fountain Of Youth have a great record after a very recent outing and he doesn’t need to improve much to take a hand in the finish.

ROMANOR – 3.10 Newton Abbot (1pt win – 7/2 generally)

ROMANOR tends to come good in high summer and has won seven of his 20 races in June, July and August for a profit of £56.33.

He’s landed three of his last four starts in July and though his patient style isn’t always ideal for this venue there’s heaps of pace on and he came from an impossible position to score over trip and track on his penultimate start.

Rain-softened ground at Cartmel didn’t suit when only fourth last time and he can bounce back.

ETON BLUE – 8.05 Windsor (2pt win – 4/1 generally)

Scarlet Dragon has a terrible record in small fields, failing to register a single victory from 26 starts in fields of 11 or fewer runners in the past five years (expected wins = 3.11). He’s not going to encounter the required strong pace in this 1m2f handicap which lacks an obvious front-runner, yet was priced up as the 9-4 favourite at the time of writing.

I’m going to side with ETON BLUE who was a big eyecatcher when third on fast ground over course and distance in May. He raced prominently that day when it paid to come from off the pace – he was one of four who raced up with the early pace and the other trio dropped away to fill the last three places.

Good to soft going probably wasn’t ideal when placed again at Sandown next time and patient tactics were no use when beating only one home at Newbury last time where he was the subject of quite a gamble. Neil Callan is a good booking and positive tactics could see him hard to catch.
