APACHE CREEK – 2.06 Market Rasen (1pt win – 4/1 generally)

There’s plenty of pace in this 2m7f handicap hurdle and it could be set up for a closer. Step forward the progressive APACHE CREEK who has done really well since finishing down the field at Newton Abbot on his handicap debut, recording form figures of 11126F1 (4-7), with the sixth place excusable as he failed to handle very soft ground at Ffos Las. He only just does enough in his races and the handicapper has taken time to get to grips with him. He only went up 4lb for his Warwick win and could be hard to beat for his in-form yard.

MR WAGYU – 2.35 Curragh (1.5pts each-way – 11/2 Coral/Ladbrokes, 5/1 generally)

MR WAGYU has been a good friend to his column over the years thanks to a strong seasonal pattern. He’s lost all 35 starts from August to May but has won 14 of his 28 starts in June/July for a profit of more than £63 to a £1 level stake at SP. He bounced back to winning ways (12-1 from 16-1) at Epsom on Derby Day and has since placed at 28-1 in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot, albeit from a favourable draw. The Stewards’ Cup is on the agenda, but this valuable prize looks worth a shot and he’ll be hard to kick out of the frame.

LORD DUDLEY – 2.35 Curragh (1pt each-way – 14/1 Paddy Power/Betfair, 12/1 generally)

There’s not a great deal of early pace, despite the 17-runner field, and there’s a fair chance that LORD DUDLEY will get a soft lead. He’s very consistent – recording form figures since his debut for his current yard of 312213272115 (4-12). The seventh place came in a field of 22 when blinkered for the first and only time and the fifth place came in a field of 16.

STAR CALIBER – 3.41 Chester (1.5pts each-way – 7/2 generally)

Andrew Balding has a phenomenal record in apprentice handicaps at Chester, his runners having recorded form figures of 114114116117113 (10-15) for a profit of £39.58 to a £1 level stake at SP. STAR CALIBER, well drawn in stall 2, has the assistance of Harry Davies and looks a likely improver on his first start since gelded.

MORGAN FAIRY – 4.05 Newbury (1pt win – 14/1 generally)

MORGAN FAIRY was only 11th of the 28 runners in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot last month but she actually fared third best of those to race up with the pace….
Position / Racing Post close-up comment
1st / held up in rear
2nd / Dwelt start, held up in rear
3rd / held up in midfield
4th / slowly away, held up in rear
5th / held up in rear
6th / held up in rear
7th / slowly into stride, held up in rear
8th / prominent
9th / held up in midfield#
10th / led overall
11th / prominent
Washraa, best of the prominent racers in eight, went close when returned to Ascot next time and Morgan Fairy was only one length behind that rival. She’s the outsider of the five-runner line-up today and could surprise.
