2.05 Kempton – PHANTOM FLIGHT (1pt win – 4/1 generally)

PHANTOM FLIGHT has shortened from 7-1 into 9-2 since I tipped him in my GG preview video on Thursday but is still worth a small interest. Progeny of his sire Siyouni tend to peak from age four and also have a good record on Polytrack, despite this he won three times on turf as a three-year-old. This run – the first of his four-year-old career – is also his first on Polytrack. His only other all-weather outing saw him go down by just half a length at 15-2 at Newcastle on his racecourse debut.

2.25 Doncaster – DIRTYOLDTOWN (1pt E/W – 10/1 generally)

In the past 20 years, siding with all the four-year-olds in the Spring Mile – the consolation race for the Lincoln – would have found 13 winners from 111 bets for a huge profit of £130.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those four-year-olds who finished fourth or worse last time out often provided real value, winning ten of their 57 starts for a profit of £159.00. DIRTYOLDTOWN qualifies on this angle and is also wearing blinkers for the first time, a positive statistical angle where the Grant Tuer yard is concerned. He beat only a couple home in a field of 14 at Ayr on his final start last term but the ground was faster than preferred and he’s best judged on his record on good to soft or softer going of 1202 (1-4), with the ‘duck egg’ excusable on account of a poor draw at Thirsk.

He’s yet to win over today’s trip but was second by half a length in the Royal Mile at Musselburgh on his reappearance last term and his sole run at Doncaster saw him finish second by a head at 25-1 in a 7f handicap to Charlie Appleby’s New Kingdom, a winner in Meydan since. He’s drawn on the far side in stall 2, which was certainly no disadvantage at this meeting last year when four of the first five home in the Lincoln came from one of the five lowest stalls. ISLA KAI (stall 1), the one I gave a positive mention to in my video preview for GG, has form figures on good to soft or softer going of 11113 (4-5) and I’ll be having a saver.

3.00 Doncaster – ASJAD (1.5pt win – 9/2 generally)

ASJAD tends to struggle on good or faster going, recording form figures of 20000 (0-5). However, on anything (officially) slower his record stands at 1111132 (5-7), with the third place at 22-1 and the runner-up effort by a short head. Two of those wins came here at Doncaster – the latest over 6.5f on soft ground last September when tipped in this column. Underfoot conditions look perfect for him, and he’s drawn near likely pace angle El Caballo.

3.35 Doncaster – ENCOURAGEABLE (1pt win – 33/1 Bet365, 25/1 generally) + BOARDMAN (1pt win – already advised 50/1 ante-post in Tuesday’s column, now 28/1 generally)

I tipped BOARDMAN at 50-1 on Tuesday thanks to his record in the spring, after a recent run, of six wins and an excusable defeat from seven starts. He’s drawn high in stall 19 and I’m also going to throw ENCOURAGEABLE (stall 3) into the mix. He’s the potential pace angle on the far side and caught the eye when sixth to Wanees at Haydock on his final 2022 outing. He probably did too much too soon that day but only went down by three lengths, doing second best of those to race up with the pace. He won well on soft ground at Thirsk on his penultimate start and backing all James Horton handicap runners would have found 12 winners from 46 bets for a profit of £42.88 to a £1 level stake at SP.
