1.15 Ascot – STRAW FAN JACK (1pt win – 9/4 generally)

STRAW FAN JACK tends to come to hand in the early months of the peak jumps season, recording form figures of 04P1212061142 (4-13) from October to December for a profit of £29.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. His last four such runs in non-handicaps have returned figures of 1112 (3-4), with the runner-up effort at 40-1 behind Pic D’Orhy on last month’s return to action. The Sheila Lewis-trained eight-year-old can get the better of Solo in this graduation chase.

Howden Graduation Chase (GBB Race)

1.50 Ascot – BLACK GERRY (1pt win – 9/2 generally)

This 2m3f handicap chase has an odd look to it, as four of the seven runners pulled up on their latest outing. BLACK GERRY is one of that quartet and I’m happy to forgive his non-completion in the Paddy Power Gold Cup as the big field wasn’t ideal and the 40-1 shot probably needed the run, his first since April. Gary Moore’s eight-year-old was a winner over 2m1f on his latest course outing and, seasonal debuts aside, his record reads 123121PP11 (5-10).

Howden Handicap Chase (GBB Race)

3.35 Ascot – NEMEAN LION (1pt e/w – 12/1 Ladbrokes, 10/1 generally)

The Greatwood Hurdle form is working out well, with the fourth and sixth – Songino and Go Dante – both winning at the next time of asking and Anyharminasking, last of the nine finishers, running second at 10-1 on his next start. That Cheltenham race could well provide the winner of this 1m7.5f contest, as the first, third and fifth all renew rivalry (Onlyamatteroftime, who ran out, also takes his chance again). Kerry Lee’s NEMEAN LION finished nine and a half lengths behind Iberico Lord in fifth place, but he challenged wider than ideal (the inside route was strongly favoured) and his jumping was not foot-perfect. Drying ground will suit and he’s the each-way play at a double-figure price.
