1.50 Ayr – BATEMANS BAY (1pt win – 11/1 generally)

The Doonside Cup has been blown wide open by the absence of antepost favourite My Prospero and it looks a good race to tackle now. The market is dominated by Royal Rhyme (7-4) and Pride Of America (3-1) but both ran in handicaps last time and horses who took that route are 0-31 in the last ten runnings of this 1m2f Listed contest. Helvic Dream, the 11-2 third favourite, is perhaps not the force of old so I’m going to chance the Kevin Ryan-trained BATEMANS BAY on his stable debut. The son of New Bay was only tenth of 14 to Gregory when 33-1 for the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot but didn’t see out the trip in that 1m6f Group 2 contest and it was also his first start since a gelding operation. His sire’s progeny are eight from 29 on their second run after being gelded (+£22.25 to a £1 level stake at SP) and he’s better equipped to cope with the slow ground than my Weekend Watch suggestion Lakota Sioux.

2.05 Newbury – GET SHIRTY (1pt win – 10/1 generally)

GET SHIRTY has encountered officially soft going on three occasions (he’s yet to race on heavy) and won every time, at odds of 10-1 (twice) and 5-1. The latest of those wins came off a handicap mark of 105 and, with underfoot conditions to suit, double-figure quotes look generous off a mark of just 97 today.

Dubai Duty Free Autumn Cup Handicap

2.40 Newbury – CERTAIN LAD (1pt E/W – 9/1 Bet365, 8/1 generally)

CERTAIN LAD isn’t the easiest to catch right but he seems happiest in fields of 11 or fewer runners on turf, recording form figures of 1134361421212336 (5-16) for a profit of £9.63 to a £1 level stake at SP. The son of Clodovil hasn’t had many opportunities on the deep ground he’s bred to relish and can end his long losing run.

Dubai Duty Free Handicap

5.20 Ayr – MR CURIOSITY (2pt win – 7/2 generally)

The Old Borough Cup was run to suit MR CURIOSITY‘s patient style but Tim Easterby’s six-year-old found trouble on more than one occasion and had to settle for a 12-1 sixth of 14 in that 1m6f Class 2 handicap at Haydock on September 9th. The son of Frankel has form figures in single-figure line-ups on turf of 13131 (3-5), improving to 111 (3-3) away from Chester, and faces his ideal conditions today.

Bearingboys – More Than Just Bearings Handicap

5.24 Wolverhampton – MOTAGALLY (1pt E/W – 14/1 Bet365, 12/1 generally)

MOTAGALLY was almost unbeatable for Charles Hills when racing on left-handed tracks, recording form figures of 131111 (5-6), with the defeat excusable as he failed to settle over a trip beyond his best on his 2019 reappearance. If ever a horse should have been sold to race in the US it was this one, but he stayed in the UK and often plied his trade on straight tracks, getting beaten every time but sometimes running with great credit, including a 33-1 fourth of 24 in the 2021 Ayr Gold Cup on his second-last start for Hills. I had high hopes when Scott Dixon paid 58,000gns for him – assuming that new connections had spotted hit obvious track preference and would win a host of races on the all-weather or at the likes of Bath, Catterick Chester and Pontefract. However, he’s drawn a blank in 11 tries for Dixon and has only shown glimmers of his old ability, notably when a 40-1 second of 19 over 7f at York in May of this year. One of those 11 runs came here at Wolverhampton – a three-length 50-1 sixth of ten over 7f on his reappearance back in March – a very useful effort given his stall 9 draw. He’s 8lb lower on his return to Dunstall Park, is better berthed tonight and if he’s ever going to prove my ‘best left-handed’ theory correct it will be on his first Class 5/left-handed outing since scoring over 5f here back in September 2018.
