2.27 Kempton – BLOW YOUR WAD (1pt win – 7/2 bet365)
BLOW YOUR WAD was only sixth at Cheltenham last time but Tom Lacey’s six-year-old wouldn’t have been suited by the undulating track. His record on flat courses, over hurdles or fences, reads 1191 (3-4), with the sole defeat when 22-1 for a Grade 1 novices’ hurdle at Aintree last spring. He’s two from two here at Kempton and the cheekpieces could help him to travel more kindly than is usually the case.
2.33 Chepstow – MIDNIGHT GINGER (2pt win – 4/1 bet365, William Hill)
The Andrew Martin-trained MIDNIGHT GINGER built on the promise of her chase debut fifth at Exeter when arriving late to score over 2m on heavy ground here last time. That trip was very much on the short side, and she’ll be happier back over today’s 2m3.5f. Her last three course outings have returned form figures of 121 (2-3), with the defeat by a short head and like many horses sired by Midnight Legend she tends to peak with the arrival of spring. She’s only gone up 1lb for that narrow course win and remains open to plenty of improvement over fences.
4.10 Kempton – GOLDEN SON (1pt win – 11/1 William Hill)
I can make cases for a few of the runners in this 2m4.5f handicap chase, especially Grandads Cottage, whose last four right-handed runs have produced three wins and a short-head second, but the value call is GOLDEN SON. The Paul Nicholls-trained six-year-old caught the eye when runner-up to Iroko at Warwick on his seasonal/stable debut in November, doing well to finish three lengths behind the winner after jumping out to his right on the left-handed track. He had Kilbeg King (beaten by a head in Grade 2 company at Ascot last Saturday) 17 lengths back in third and winner/third are now rated 149 and 142 respectively. Golden Son, now rated 135, pulled up the next twice, but both runs came on left-handed tracks and the switch to a right-handed venue and first-time cheekpieces could bring about improvement. Since the beginning of 2010, Paul Nicholls is 34 from 143 when using first-time cheekpieces on a runner who finished fourth or worse on its latest start and backing them blind would have returned a profit of £41.01 to a £1 level stake at SP. In chases only, the score is 21 from 73 for a profit of £57.05.
5.50 Chelmsford – RUNAROUND SIOUX (1.5pt win – 10/1 William Hill)
RUNAROUND SIOUX shaped well in a 6.5f Newbury maiden on her debut last summer, doing second best of those to come from off the pace on her way to an 18-1 fifth of ten. The horses who finished first, second, third, fourth and sixth are now rated 106, 94, 81, 93 and 67 respectively, suggesting that she could be well in off 64 on her handicap debut today. Rod Millman’s filly looked to be campaigned with handicaps in mind after that debut run, failing to strike aa blow under patient rides at Kempton (12-1) and here at Chelmsford (40-1). Since the start of 2018, her yard’s handicap debutants have a 12 from 86 record for a profit of £56.75 and the small field will suit.
6.20 Chelmsford – TYGER BAY (1pt win – 12/1 William Hill)
TYGER BAY, wearing the second colours of Middleham Park Racing, finished last of eight in a 6f handicap at Lingfield when we last saw him, but he was weak in the betting, blew the start and any chance he had was soon ended when William Carver switched him to the ‘dead’ rail. The seven-year-old has yet to win at Chelmsford but has been badly berthed on all three visits and has run well in the circumstances, including when a half-length third over this 6f trip in November. He could have been better drawn tonight but he’s worth chancing at double-figure odds.
