1.29 Kelso – ELVIS MAIL (2pt win – 10/3 generally)
I expect that both Corach Rambler and Empire Steel, the current one-two in the betting, will need their reappearance outings, suggesting that course expert ELVIS MAIL is over-priced (I can see him starting as favourite). Nick Alxander’s nine-year-old tends to reserve his best efforts for here and Ayr and his record at the two venues, below Class 1 level, reads 4341211112224131 (7-16). When returning from a break of at least 150 days, as he is today, those figures improve to 4111 (3-4), with the wins at 8-1, 9-4 and 9-4 and the defeat at 66-1.
2.10 Doncaster – REDHOT WHISPER (0.5pt E/W – 33/1 generally)
Progeny of the sire TOO DARN HOT have a fine record on desperate going, with those running on soft or heavy ground (based on race times, not the official going) landing seven of their 27 starts for a profit of £16.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. REDHOT WHISPER is a huge price for this 1m Group 1 contest after finishing an eyecatching 18-1third over 7f on fast ground at Leicester before his close-up 11-2 second in a soft-ground course and distance maiden. God’s Window, winner of that race, was trading at around 8-1 at the time of writing, and Redhot Whisper doesn’t deserve to be almost eight or nine times his price.
2.25 Cheltenham – WAYFINDER (0.5pt E/W – 33/1 Paddy Power & Betfair, 28/1 generally)
I’ve gone round in circles in this race and can make good cases for LORD ACCORD, TWIG and KINONDO KWETU. However, at the prices the only one I want to punt is WAYFINDER. The nine-year-old’s last four wins have come at Chepstow, so it’s interesting to see him reappear at Cheltenham on his first start following wind surgery rather than the Welsh venue. He’s one to avoid in the depths of winter, recording form figures of 36B62PPP4 (0-9) from November to February but has figures of 14121111P (5-9) in the March to October period. He has the best last-time out speed figure according to Proform’s ratings and, at odds of about 25-1, makes each-way appeal.
3.00 Cheltenham – BUGS MORAN (1pt E/W – 5/1 generally)
BUGS MORAN returned from a break of 464 days to run second by three-quarters of a length in a Listed handicap hurdle at Galway in August and probably should have gone one better at Listowel the following month. However, Jack Kennedy took the ‘swamp’ route around the inside rail where the ground was clearly slower and was again beaten by three-quarters of a length. He’s finished in the first four in all nine starts since his racecourse debut and makes plenty of each-way appeal.
