12.30 Newbury – KAPGA DE LILY (1pt E/W – 13/2 generally)

Venetia Williams has a fine record with handicappers (Flat, hurdles or chases) on their first run back following a wind operation, with those returning from a break of at least 150 days landing 14 of their 38 starts for a profit of £72.45 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 7.10, A/E = 1.97). The yard was among the winners here yesterday and KAPGA DE LILY looks interesting on his comeback following wind surgery. He’s recorded two wins and a fourth place from his last three seasonal debuts and, while possibly best right-handed, he has won this way around and is likely to be one the front end in a race featuring mostly hold-up performers.

12:30 Sir Peter O’Sullevan Memorial Handicap Chase (GBB Race)

1.11 Bangor – CHTI BALKO (0.5pt E/W – 18/1 with bet365, 14/1 with BetMGM, BetVictor) and FEEL THE PINCH (1pt win – 10/3 generally)

CHTI BALKO caught the eye when runner-up at Sedgefield last time where he took the ‘swamp’ route on the inside rail. His four-and-a-half length defeat at odds of 16-1 was a cracking effort in the circumstances and that reappearance effort will bring him on. He’s well into the veteran stage but we’d have a made a big profit by backing Donald McCain handicap hurdlers at Bangor and he went close on his second start last year.

FEEL THE PINCH was one of my GG eyecatchers when scoring at Ludlow the other day, a run that took his record in fields of nine or fewer runners to 813141F13U31111 (8-15) for a profit of £55.63 to a £1 level stake at SP. His small-field Bangor record reads 11F1U1 (4-6) and he should go well again.

13:11 Richard Pennell Memorial Handicap Hurdle

2.50 Newbury (already advised) – MIDNIGHT RIVER (2pt win – now 9/1 generally) and ZANZA (0.5pt E/W now at 22/1 with Betfair and Coral)

Now that the final declarations for the 3m2f Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase have been revealed I want to back MIDNIGHT RIVER, who I think could shorten considerably from his current odds. Dan Skelton’s eight-year-old ended last season with victory in the 3m1f handicap chase at Aintree on Grand National Day and made a pleasing comeback in the Charlie Hall Chase, finishing a 23-length third of four. His record immediately following a win now reads 24FP303 (0-7), whereas his form following a defeat stands at 3111F713111 (7-11). He can bounce back in Saturday’s big race – the Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Newbury.

Course expert ZANZA, whose Newbury chase record stands at 1114 (3-4), has done this column a few good turns over the years and is worth a saver.

14:50 Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap) (GBB Race)
