1.37 Newmarket – I LOVE PARIS (1.5pt win – 7/1 generally)
Ed Walker’s I LOVE PARIS went close on soft ground on Newmarket’s July Course on her debut, finishing third by half a length behind runners now rated 95 and 82 and had no luck at Ffos Las next time, blowing the start and then meeting trouble in running. She bounced back to the sort of form she showed on her debut when keeping on into third over 1m on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile last time where the ground, officially good, was faster than ideal judged on her breeding. Progeny of her sire, Too Darn Hot, appreciate genuinely soft or heavy conditions (judged on race times, not the official going), landing seven of their 29 such starts for a profit of £14.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. Her trainer is nine from 27 with his nursery debutants over 7f or further on turf for a profit of £31.13 to a £1 level stake at SP, with the last five qualifiers recording form figures of 11121 (4-5), with the defeat by a neck. The return to deep ground, step up to 1m1f and switch to handicap company for the first time could all bring about further improvement.
2.15 Ayr – VINTAGE FIZZ (1pt win – 9/1 generally)
VINTAGE FIZZ jumped out to his left when a modest sixth at right-handed Market Rasen last time and will be better suited by left-handed Ayr today. His record in handicap company on left-handed tracks reads 211842131 (4-9), improving to 1131 (3-4) over trips of about 2m4f for a profit of £12.38 to a £1 level stake at SP. The booking of Sean Bowen catches the eye.
3.30 Wetherby – ALBERT’S BACK (1pt win – 6/1 generally)
I’m treading carefully where Wetherby’s hurdle course is concerned today, as there are rail movements and it’s likely they’ll doll off a hurdle or two because of the desperate ground. However, I still want a small interest on my Weekend Watch nap ALBERT’S BACK, whose course record over hurdles reads 111F1221 (5-7), with the runner-up efforts by a short head and a neck.
3.45 Ascot – ZHIGULI (1pt win – 16/1 generally)
The Gary Moore-trained ZHIGULI has form figures on soft or heavy ground (based on race times, not the official going) of B9631171131 (5-11), improving to 1131 (3-4) over fences only. I was hoping it would be described as heavy at Ascot today (it’s currently soft, good to soft in places) but it’s raining at present and is forecast to do so for the rest of the day, so it could be very testing come post time. Zhiguli’s trainer has landed this race three times in recent years and he looks set to go well off his low weight.
