There’s precious little that appeals from a betting standpoint on Sunday but the most interesting race of the day by far is the Grade 3 Newlands Chase over the 2m trip at Naas. The Willie Mullins-trained Ferney Hollow heads the betting on his return from a 791-day absence but the nine-year-old is hard to support on deep ground after such a long layoff, especially at a skinny price. Second favourite Ashtree Meadow would prefer good ground and the race could be ripe for an upset. Step forward last year’s winner REBEL GOLD, whose five best RPRs (Racing Post Ratings) have come from late December until late February. His win 12 months ago came on yielding ground, but he’s won on heavy going before and shaped with promise when a staying on 22-1 fifth behind Madara at the Dublin Racing Festival on his latest assignment.
