2.25 Goodwood – SPANISH STAR (1pt win – 4/1 generally)

I was also set to tip Indian Creak for this 6f handicap as he goes well in the mud, likes small fields and looks set to get loose on the lead. However, on delving deeper he’s won just once from 13 starts here and that was over 7f back in August 2019. Of greater interest is SPANISH STAR. The Patrick Chamings-trained veteran last won over 7f on fast ground, but he’s ideally served by 6f on soft and will appreciate this easier contest after his fine 28-1 seven of 27 in the Stewards Cup, doing third best of his group. His course and distance record in handicaps now reads 2117117 (4-7), with the other seventh-placed effort excusable as he bled from the nose. He’s something of a tricky ride, needing to challenge late, but David Probert gets on well with him and is back on board today.

William Hill Keep Your Raceday Positive Handicap

3.15 Naas – AUSSIE GIRL (1pt E/W – /1 generally with the firms paying four places)

Pacesetter AUSSIE GIRL, beaten by half a length into second place when 9-2 favourite for the 20-runner Scurry Handicap at the Curragh on her penultimate start, was the only one of the first five home not to come from midfield or further back. Fozzy Stack’s three-year-old followed that with a narrow defeat in a 6f Listed contest at Naas, doing best of those to race up with the disputed early pace. Since qualified for handicaps, her record in fields of 12 or fewer runners now reads 412212 (2-6) and, though up in class to Group 3 level today, she faces little in the way of competition for the early lead and is worth an each-way punt, especially if you can get on with a firm paying four places.

Tally-Ho Stud Irish EBF Ballyogan Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies & Mares)

5.00 Naas – TAKE HEART (2pt win – 6/4 Bet365 + BetUK, 11/8 generally)

It was typically hard to come from off the pace at the Curragh’s meeting on August 13th and the winner of the 1m2f La Celia Wines Handicap, Angelic Appeal, was always prominent, sitting in third place towards in the inside rail in the early stages. Third-placed Mr King, the 11-4 favourite, was also in the van throughout and it was the performance of runner-up TAKE HEART that caught the eye. Held up in rear, he weaved his way through towards the inside rail, but the line came too soon. The patiently-ridden fourth – Slieve Binnian, – was a 7-1 winner of a 19-runner handicap when returned to the Curragh for his next run just six days later and Take Heart should take all the beating here.
