BUNIANN – 2.10 Ripon (1pt each-way – 12/1 bet365, 10/1 generally)

I’d usually be wary of backing a hold-up horse in this 5f apprentice handicap as five of the six previous winners have made all but we have a bigger field than usual this time around and we have plenty of pace from the likes of Qaaraat (runner-up in 2019 off a 17lb higher mark and not a bad Placepot/saver option), Latin Five, Gullane One and Cuppacoco.

BUNIANN (stall 13 of 13) is 0-17 on turf but has run well on both previous attempts over course and distance finishing second of six (beaten by one length and doing best of those ridden patiently) and fourth of nine when second best of the hold-up horses after meeting trouble in running. Those runs came off marks of 71 and 69 and he runs off just 63 today. The first-time headgear could also bring about some improvement, as trainer Paul Midgley is seven from 40 with this headgear in the past 15 years for a profit of £75.00. In Class 6 company – today’s grade – the strike-rate improves to six from 25 for a profit of £73.00.

YORKINDNESS – 4.40 Ripon (1pt win – 5/1)

I wrote the following about YORKINDNESS in the Racing Post Weekender after her debut third at Newmarket last July…
‘Yorkidding scored eight times at up to two miles for Mark Johnston and her first foal, Yorkindness, was introduced in the 7f Rich Energy Fillies’ Novice Stakes at Newmarket last Friday. The trip looked sure to be on the short side for the daughter of Nathaniel but she ran a fine race in third place under Ryan Moore, getting outpaced as the leaders kicked for home just over one furlong out before keeping on well. She was less than two lengths down at the line and put five lengths between herself and the fourth, Godolphin’s 6-5 favourite With The Moonlight. Her dam won over a stiff mile on her second juvenile outing and she’s one to follow closely when given a test of stamina more in line with her pedigree.’

She was beaten at odds of evens and 6-4 on her next two starts but both came on the all-weather and she raced in the ‘swamp’ when fourth at Lingfield in the second of them. She signed off with a last-of-nine effort, also at Lingfield, in early December but took a keen grip on the ‘dead’ rail again and will be happier back on turf after her winter break. She looks the only pace in this race and could be hard to catch on her first start beyond 1m.
