4.00 Brighton – PARTY ISLAND (1pt E/W – 11/1 BetUK, 9/1 generally)

PARTY ISLAND prefers Polytrack to turf but this chalk-based track shouldn’t pose a problem and he ran well on the grass at Lingfield last time, staying on to finish second of four at 7-1. He’s won seven of his 21 handicap starts when returned to the track within six weeks of a previous outing (+£40.88 to a £1 level stake at SP). I’ve saved on pace angle ALUMNUS, who represents a yard with a good record in this race.

16:00 Star Sports Brighton Challenge Cup Handicap (For The Brighton Challenge Cup)

7.53 Salisbury – YELLOW LION (1pt E/W – 9/1 Bet365, 8/1 generally)

There’s plenty of early pace on offer in this 1m handicap courtesy of War Chant (stall 1), Star Of Mayo (stall 5) and Azahara Palace (stall 8). It’s also possible that Garrick Painter, who wears a visor for the first time, could be ridden more prominently than usual. YELLOW LION will appreciate the likely strong gallop and will also be happier back at this trip after his non-staying fifth of 12 over 1m2f at Newbury last time. He wasn’t best drawn when beaten just over two lengths into sixth over this trip at Newbury on his penultimate start and, though a nine-race maiden, remains very interesting on the strength of his 20-1 fourth to Quddwah over 7f here in May, his only previous course outing. The winner followed up and is now rated 95, runner-up Balance Play scored at Glorious Goodwood last week and is now also rated 95, while third-placed Greek Order is on 85 after his last-time-out Sandown success. The 14-length fifth in that Salisbury contest, 150-1 shot Island Native, was only beaten by half a length when making his handicap debut next time. Yellow Lion runs off just 66 today and it will be disappointing if he doesn’t finish in the shake-up.
