2.20 Ludlow – DAMARTA (1pt win – 6/1 Bet365, 7/2 generally)

DAMARTA didn’t have the race run to suit when an 11-1 fifth at Newton Abbot on October 2nd where Olly Murphy’s market drifter fared second best of the closers after racing keenly in the early stages. The obvious conclusion, and indeed the one I reached immediately after the race, was that we wouldn’t see the best of him until handicapping but the presence of Sean Bowen in the saddle today has changed my mind. Bowen does well for the yard, especially on horses who were beaten last time out and returning to the track within six weeks. So far this year, he’s won on 22 of the 78 qualifiers (28%) for a profit of £51.32 to a £1 level stake at SP.

14:20 Tom Calvert Memorial Novices’ Hurdle (GBB Race) (Div I)

4.25 Wolverhampton – ASIAN TIDE (1pt win – 12/1 generally)

Since the beginning of 2017, Jamie Osborne is 23 from 172 (13.4%) with his handicap debutants for huge a profit of £137.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. The most recent qualifier to run at Wolverhampton was Style Of Life who did this column a good turn when scoring at odds of 12-1 on September 25th and I’m hopeful that ASIAN TIDE, well drawn in stall 2, can follow suit. The filly’s staying-on 50-1 three-length fifth over 7f at Newmarket in August is a good pointer to her chances – the first four home in that race are now rated 79, 80, 75 and 73 and her opening mark of 65 could be on the generous side. She was unsuited by the drop to 6f when well held at Kempton last time but needed that for a mark and is likely to do better now making her nursery debut.
