4.35 Carlisle – LEZARDRIEUX (2pt win – 18/1 Skybet + BetVictor, 16/1 generally)
Grant Tuer’s LEZARDRIEUX beat only one home when 12-1 for a Catterick handicap last month but he had the worst of the draw and we’ve now reached the time of year in which he peaks. His handicap record in September/October, in Class 4 or lower company, stands at 12121211048 (5-11) for a profit of £25.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. He’s won a handicap in September in each of the last three seasons and, last year, his win came on the back of a last-of-13 effort in August. Fast ground holds no fears, stall 10 is fine based on what we’ve seen at Carlisle this year and he’s one of only a few pace angles in the 16-runner line-up.
6.45 Wolverhampton – YEOMAN (1pt E/W – 5/1 generally)
YEOMAN found one too good when we were on each-way at Southwell last time, a run that toom his form figures on Tapeta to 112 (2-3), with both wins at Wolverhampton. He only scraped home by a neck off a 6lb lower mark for the latest of those course wins but the steady early pace was against his patient running style and he had five lengths to spare over the next closer to finish.
7.50 Wolverhampton – CIVIL LAW (1pt E/W – 9/1 Paddy Power + Betfair, 8/1 generally)
This 9.4f Racing League handicap is a cracker. NAXOS (stall 1) was tempting now back on Tapeta (he’s 2-2 on this surface, with both wins at Newcastle), though stall 1 might not be ideal especially if getting into a duel for the early lead with MARIE’S DIAMOND (stall 4) and his price is covered in offers of around 4-1. FANTASY BELIEVER was also of interest having fared best of those to come from off the pace when third at Chepstow last time, but his sire hasn’t got the greatest record with his runners on Tapeta, and he’s finished unplaced in both previous tries on this surface. The one I’m siding with is Roger Teal’s course expert CIVIL LAW, well drawn in stall 6. He finished well beaten at Kempton in early June when last seen but his record at Dunstall Park reads 121117 (4-6), with the first defeat by a neck and the seventh place when repeatedly hampered in a race not run to suit his patient style. He’s two from two here when rested for at least 90 days.
