12.50 Sedgefield – ONESTEPATATIME (1pt win – 15/8 generally)
ONESTEPATATIME took her record in Sedgefield handicaps to 231121 (3-6) when getting up close home over course and distance last time, with the runner-up efforts by just a head and a neck. She clocked a fast time (according to Proform’s ratings) for that win and can follow up.
1.10 Southwell – ALI STAR BERT (1pt E/W – 12/1 Bet365, 9/1 generally)
Any race in which the hard-to-win with Eurkash is priced up as 2-1 favourite has to be worth a second look and only the terminally optimistic will want to side with Paul Webber’s nine-year-old, who has scored just once from 23 starts. He was only beaten by a neck into second place at Warwick last time, but he was always up with the pace on a track that strongly favours front-runners. Admittedly, today’s opposition is no great shakes and tracker horse Star Flyer – best of the prominent racers when third at Huntingdon last time – is passed over on account of the step up to 3m and deep ground. Of greater interest is ALI STAR BERT, winner of two of his eight chase starts. Those wins came on good and good to soft going but he was a close-up third over 3m3f on soft ground on his penultimate start and stamina won’t be an issue. His last-time-out 54-length sixth of 18 looks very poor at first glance but that race is working out well with the winner following up, the runner-up going down by a neck on his next start and the 17-length third scoring at Market Rasen.
2.40 Southwell – MISS ARABELLA (1pt E/W – 12/1 Bet365, 11/1 generally)
SANDY THOMSON ended a losing of 23 with a 3-1 winner at Newcastle last Wednesday where his only other runner finished second at 9-2. He added another 3-1 winner from just one representative at Catterick 24 hours later and I want to get with the yard’s runners for the remainder of the winter, a time of year they usually perform well. Since 2012, had we backed all Sandy Thomson inmates in November December and January we’d have won 101 of our 499 bets (20.2% strike-rate) and made a very healthy profit of £264.98 to a £1 level stake at SP. MISS ARABELLA, runner-up in a Kelso bumper on her comeback in late September, ran with credit on her hurdles bow at Musselburgh earlier this month where she finished an 80-1 sixth of 12, doing third best of the closers. She didn’t jump brilliantly but she’ll improve for the experience and is worth an each-way punt.
