EL HIBRI – Ffos Las 2.30 (1pt win – 2/1 generally)

The stands’ side route was strongly favoured in the 6f Happy Birthday Molly Rose Handicap for three-year-olds at Haydock on July 1st and a pace collapse saw the ‘golden highway’ open up beautifully for the patiently-ridden 18-1 shot Straits Of Moyle. The winner (‘steadied start, held up in rear’), runner-up Tothenines (‘towards rear, pushed along and headway over 2f out’) and fourth Bond Power (‘towards rear, pushed along halfway’) were all flattered by the way the race panned out and the eyecatcher was 28-1 third of eight EL HIBRI. Tony Carroll’s son of Havana Gold was well drawn in stall 7 of 8 but was beaten to the favoured rail by Mattice (stall 8) and tracked that one in the very early stages. Mattice drifted off the rail just after halfway, allowing El Habri to get across but Ben Curtis gave him a right-hander, which saw him edge left off the fence, allowing the winner to come through on his inside. He was four lengths down at the line but was clear best of the prominent racers. The others who chased the strong pace (the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth) improved their RPRs (Racing Post Ratings) by 8lb, 12lb, 8lb and 65lb when all making the frame next time out. The step back up in trip is a slight worry but he’s still worth an interest.

GOLDEN GAL – Catterick 4.45 (2pts win – 5/1 Betfair & Paddy Power, 4/1 bet365)

GOLDEN GAL emerged best of those to race stands’ side from their disadvantageous high draws in a 5f apprentice handicap at Thirsk last time (first four drawn 2, 3, 1 and 9 of 10) and will appreciate the switch from straight to left-handed track when tackling this 5f handicap. Her course record in handicap company reads 21224 (1-5) and, with soft ground forecast, she looks well drawn in stall 8 of 10, unlike main market rival and 19-race maiden Jet So Go, who has stall 1.

PUNCHBOWL FLYER – Kempton 7.50 (0.5pt win – 33/1 Betfair & Paddy Power, 25/1 William Hill, 22/1 bet365)

PUNCHBOWL FLYER performs best in 6f handicaps on proper soft or heavy going and hasn’t had his preferred conditions since finishing second in his group when ninth of 24 in last season’s Stewards’ Cup. He ran off a mark of 105 that day and is back down to just 93 tonight. The downside is the return to the all-weather – he’s finished sixth in both previous runs on synthetics but the first came over 7f, which he doesn’t stay, and the other on his seasonal debut last term. He looks set to get a soft lead – Ayr Harbour can press the pace but he’s never won in a field of more than seven runners – and he’s worth chancing to small stakes at a big price now that he wears a first-time visor (he won in first-time blinkers at around this time of year in 2020). His sire, Dream Ahead, is nine from 40 with his course and distance handicappers for a profit of £22.23 (expected winners = 5.07).
