Andrew Mount Tips

Top tipster Andrew Mount has six bets across five races on day one of the Goodwood festival. Check out his thoughts on his selections below, alongside a new customer offer from Matchbook, which is offering Money Back as a Free Bet up to £30 if your first bet loses.

Published: 5:24pm – 25th July (Odds correct at time of posting, where available)

WEST END CHARMER – Goodwood 1.50 (1pt each-way, 11-1 generally, William Hill seven places)

Some of my most painful memories of punting at Glorious Goodwood involve back the wrong Mark Johnston runner in handicaps over 1m2f+. He has two entries in the 1m2f Chesterfield Cup that gets this year’s meeting underway and, while I’m going to save on Frankie Dettori’s mount Forest Falcon, the main play is six-year-old WEST END CHARMER who has the able assistance of Franny Norton.

He could have been better drawn but has the tactical speed to gain a good early position and is running in a handicap for the first time since placing third of 14 at Royal Ascot in 2020. The drop in trip/class will suit after his last-time-out fifth to Yibir in a Group 2 at Newmarket.

JIFFY BOY – Goodwood 2.25 (0.5pt each-way, 66-1 bet365)

MYSTERIOUS NIGHT – Goodwood 2.25 (1pt win, 4-1 generally)

JIFFY BOY was very green when a 12-1 third to Persian Force (subsequently runner-up in the Coventry Stakes before his Group 2 win at Newmarket) in the Brocklesby at Doncaster and went two places better at Leicester just six days later.

That win was hugely impressive as he made the running on the stands’ side rail, never the place to be at Leicester. That form was boosted when the badly-berthed third won his next two starts. The absence since April 1st is obviously a concern but there’s compensation in the price and Robyn Brisland’s two runners at this meeting last year ran second at 66-1 and third at 9-1.

MYSTERIOUS NIGHT did best of the closers when third to Persian Force in the July Stakes and will relish the likely strong gallop.

14.25 Japan Racing Association Vintage Stakes (Group 2) (IRE Incentive Race)

CELSIUS – Goodwood 4.10 (1.5pt win, 5-1 generally)

CELSIUS has won seven of his 16 starts over 5f on turf when the actual going (not the official version) was good or faster and backing him under these conditions would have returned a profit of £45.20 to the usual £1 stake.

In fields of 11 or more runners only, his good/faster-going figures improve to 121111 (5-6), including a two from two haul this season. He faces 14 rivals, looks well drawn in stall 6 and will be hard to beat if they haven’t overdone the watering.

CELTIC CHAMPION – Goodwood 4.45 (1pt win, 9-2 generally)

CELTIC CHAMPION (stall 13 of 17) was too green to do himself justice when third at Windsor on his debut last month and that form has been franked by subsequent wins from the runner-up and fourth.

He’s drawn a little closer to the stands’ side rail than I’d prefer but I’d have him favourite ahead if Godolphin’s Mischief Magic in my tissue and I have to get involved.

Simply backing any Andrew Balding-trained second-time-out juvenile, who finished second, third or fourth on debut, would have found 51 winners from 165 bets (31% strike-rate) for a profit of £37.17 to £1.

16.45 British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes (Colts & Geldings) (IRE Incentive Race)

BREAKING LIGHT – Goodwood 5.20 (1pt win, 9-2 generally)

BREAKING LIGHT won well at 11-1 at Haydock on her first start following wind surgery last time, impressive as the runner-up was well fancied.

Two of Karl Burke’s four previous first-time wind op winners followed up and she could be hard to beat from a useful low draw under Hollie Doyle.
