2.05 Chester – SEANTRABH (1pt E/W – 9/2 generally)

Since the beginning of 2013 we’ve had 968 races at Chester and 51.2% of them were won by horses drawn 1, 2 or 3. The shorter the distance, the stronger the draw bias and that figure becomes 68% in 5f handicaps. It’s ever so slightly bonkers to see Jer Batt (stall 12 of 12) priced up as the 4-1 favourite for this contest and, while I’m expecting him to be withdrawn in the morning with a BDC (bad draw certificate), I have to take him on. The obvious one is Declan Carroll’s SEANTRABH who looked in need of the outing when unable to take advantage of a favourable high draw at Thirsk on his return to action. His three-length fourth of 14 was still a respectable effort – it was also his first run since gelded – and it looks as though he’ll be first to the inside rail.

3.15 Chester – GALACTIC JACK (1pt E/W – 40/1 generally)

I’m going full maverick in the Chester Vase and recommending an each-way bet on 40-1 outsider GALACTIC JACK. Those who’ve followed my selections for over 20 years on GG.co.uk (and GG.com before that) will know that big profits come from big prices, and we shouldn’t shy away from outsiders.

The market for this 1m4f Group 3 contest is headed by 4-6 shot Arrest but the son of Frankel is making his seasonal debut and Frankie Dettori – a rare visitor to Chester – hasn’t got the greatest record here. He was beaten at odds of 5-4 on his first run last term and he’s priced up on potential, as opposed to what he’s achieved on the track. Galactic Jack was a big eyecatcher at Goodwood on his racecourse debut last August, finishing a close-up 16-1 third in novice company despite hanging to the left on the right-handed track. Stepped up from 1m to 1m2f at the same venue next time, he kept on well to score by one length despite trying to hang left under David Prober’s left-hand drive. He made the running in the Group 3 Zetland Stakes at Newmarket on his final juvenile outing and again wanted to lug left. It was only having rivals between him and the rail that prevented him doing so until the latter stages.

Those left-leaning tendencies re-emerged on his comeback at Newmarket’s Craven meeting and there were more positives than negatives to take from his 22-1 sixth in the Listed Feilden Stakes. Going left-handed, with the comfort of a rail to his immediate left could bring about huge improvement and his trainer has a fine record on the Roodee, scoring with 94 of his 460 runners (20.4% strike-rate) for a profit of £79.92 to a £1 level stake at SP (the expected number of winners, based on their odds, was only 78.15).

I fear HADRIANUS – Franny Norton will no doubt try to get across and dictate from stall 5 of 5 – but Galactic Jack is eight times the price of the Johnston runner and has to be the bet.

Boodles Chester Vase Stakes (Group 3)

3.45 Chester – KING’S CROWN (1pt win – 18/1 Paddy Power + Betfair, 16/1 generally)

First the bad news – KING’S CROWN is drawn in stall 8 of 12 in a 6f handicap at Chester. Now the good news – he has early speed to burn, and he ran a belter at Newmarket on last month’s reappearance at Newmarket, finishing a 40-1 fifth of 14 in a Class 2 handicap after doing too much too soon into the headwind. That form has been franked by subsequent wins for the runner-up/third and he’s worth chancing at big odds, especially after the Adrian Nicholls yard ended a losing run with a winner at Newcastle on Tuesday night. I thought we’d be looking at between 8-1 and 12-1 but he’s a general 16-1 poke and 18-1 in a place.
